Companies Should Prepare for New FDA Nutrition Label Requirements
Companies Should Prepare for New FDA Nutrition Label Requirements
Denver, Colorado, United States – October 9, 2023 —
Last September, the White House unveiled a comprehensive National Strategy designed to promote healthier dietary habits by the year 2030. In addition to reducing hunger and food access issues, this initiative is designed to reduce diet-related diseases such as hypertension, obesity, and type 2 diabetes.
To help with efforts, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is making several changes to help consumers make better-informed decisions about the food they buy.
According to a press release the FDA published this summer, shoppers need easy access to essential nutritional information that can help them make decisions on what to buy. A standardized front-of-package (FOP) system, which currently does not exist, would display simplified, quick-reference nutrition information based on the Nutrition Facts label on the side or back of food items. When presented with other relevant contextual information, these at-a-glance nutrition facts would allow even those with limited training in nutrition literacy to choose the best food from a nutritional standpoint.
Although many other countries have already implemented similar practices, these changes would require most US-based companies in the food industry to revamp their product labels to accommodate these new requirements. This means redesigning and reprinting labels before these proposed changes become official.
Brands wanting to get ahead of the game should start vetting options for the best product label printing businesses so they can switch to the new guidelines immediately. These new partners may not be corporate conglomerates but locally-owned custom label printers like The Columbine Label Company, Inc.
This Denver-based product label printing company has been in the business for over 35 years and specializes in labels for food industry products. Once you redesign your labels to meet the new FDA requirements, Columbine Label will print labels on carefully-selected materials so they stand up to the test for on-shelf and in-home performance.
The FDA is still reviewing commentary received during the 30-day procedural notice issued in June. However, food manufacturers should not wait until the last minute to prepare for these upcoming changes. It’s better to plan ahead to meet these new demands as soon as they roll out, especially since everyone will be competing to get their labels printed and onto products so they can restock the shelves when the time comes.
