E-commerce Increasing Need for Airport Logistics Infrastructure: Augusto Beato
November 09, 2018 – – Portland SEO’s Augusto Beato says that airports should anticipate clear deficiency in logistics capacity due to continued growth in e-commerce.
He was reacting to news that a planning application has been submitted to develop a logistics and advanced manufacturing center on land adjacent to Doncaster Sheffield Airport to service the continued growth in e-commerce. “Airport e-commerce is significantly under-developed but, in a huge industry shift and expansion, may not be for long,” said Beato, who is the CEO of Portland SEO. “Technology firms that specialize in developing airport e-commerce infrastructure would have lots of business ahead of them.”

Doncaster Sheffield Airport owner, Peel Group, said that the application had been progressed in direct response to the growing market need for large-scale regional logistics and manufacturing sites. The development is part of the airport’s wider development plan, with cargo playing a central role.
The Vision is for an ‘aerotropolis’ with the capacity to handle 250,000 tonnes of cargo per year as well as an annual 25m passengers.
E-commerce giant Amazon had been using the airport for some of its European freighter flights.
A report from Sheffield based Commercial Property Partners, which accompanied the application, concludes there is a clear deficiency in logistics capacity in Doncaster with only five months’ supply of existing stock available within the local market.
The Peel Land and Property development, which will be on land that is part of the airport’s wider Aero Centre Yorkshire site, proposes up to 325,160 square meters of space, with supporting infrastructure.
