The election of a certain president has caused a great deal of stress and anxiety in both Americans and in the rest of the world. This can be tied to many different illnesses, including lower back pain.

“The stress-related back pain diagnosis is a “psychosomatic” or “psycho-physiological” one. [This] is any illness in which physical symptoms are thought to be the direct result of psychological or emotional factors,” says Dr. William M. Deardorff, a clinical health psychologist at the UCLA school of medicine.

In other words, what happens in the mind can directly affect what happens in the body, in what professionals have called “the pain cycle”.

During the pain cycle, the first step is a limitation in the regular functions of life. This causes fear and anxiety, which, combined with advice to avoid any strenuous activities, can lead to muscle weakening, which causes further limitation.

Dr. Deardorff, however, stresses that although the problem may stem from the patient’s mind, it is still a real issue that needs to be addressed. “It should be emphasized that even though psychological factors may be causing the physical symptoms, the symptoms are not imaginary. They are very real physical problems.”

This is a growing concern in London Ontario, a city whose creative digital sector is flourishing.

According to Kapil Lakhotia of the London Economic Development Corp, this sector’s growth is leading to a shift in the city’s makeup. “London companies are projecting a lot of hiring this year in the digital, creative space. It could be 1000 jobs by the end of the year,” he said.

Along with more jobs in digital comes increased back pain, as more workers are spending their days seated in an office chair, which some studies have claimed can be as harmful as smoking.

This creates the perfect storm for increased back pain, with which chiropractors are perfectly poised to help.

According to the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, there are 141 registered chiropractors in the city of London Ontario, most of whom are currently active and accepting new patients.
