Exploding E-Cigarette Propels Device Fragments At UK Barmaid, As E-Cig Explosion Lawsuit Case Total Rises
July 03, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on the increasing controversy over e-cigarettes due to several reports of exploding batteries that can cause injury and, subsequently, become a fire hazard. There have been reported instances the devices exploding and pieces of the device being propelled through the air causing bodily harm and fire hazards.
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has stated that in most cases the origin of these explosions is due to the lithium ion batteries in the units. The manufacturing guidelines for many of the batteries are somewhat loose, especially with the lesser known e-cigarette brands. The internal pressure can rise too high in the e-cigarette battery which can cause an explosion, most often occurring while the unit is charging.
FEMA has concluded that between 2009 and 2014 there have been at least 25 e-cigarette explosions in the United States with the rate increasing as usage of the devices increase. There have been cases of exploding e-cigarettes in the U.K. and the United States.
A barmaid in Yorkshire sustained minor injuries when she was hit by an exploding e-cig behind the bar that was charging, according to BBC.com. She stated she was shocked at what happened and was thankful that she only sustained minor injuries with no permanent damage resulting from the explosion. Firefighters responding to the call, however, stated that the lesser known brands of e-cigs can create a fire hazard.
In the U.S., an Oklahoma man was not as lucky as the U.K. barmaid. He sustained severe head injuries when his e-cigarette exploded and had to be rushed to the emergency room, where he received 8 stitches.
