FDA Issues Public Safety Warnings For IVC Filters, As IVC Filter Lawsuit Filings Increase
July 02, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on a recent statement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regarding the use of IVC filters. The agency reminds medical professionals and patients that the filters should be removed from patients who have had them implanted in their inferior vena cava veins within 29-54 days if the threat of pulmonary embolism has ebbed.
IVC filters are small, cage-like medical devices implanted in the Inferior Vena Cava vein that captures blood clots to prevent them from reaching the heart and lungs. If the clot reaches these vital organs a pulmonary embolism or other serious issues could result. The devices are generally used in those patients who cannot take traditional blood-thinning medications. Once the clot is caught in the cage, it remains there until it naturally dissipates.
The filters are now the subject of some controversy, as a number of lawsuits have been filed by patients that have alleged that the filters have broken loose from their original implantation location or the device has fractured. Once fractured, the pieces can migrate to other parts of the body. Once the pieces begin to migrate, this can present serious consequences to the patient. According to allegations in several lawsuits filed, there is a high potential that they may become embedded in vital organs and the intestines. There is also a risk that the pieces can puncture veins as they move through the bloodstream. Some patients have been told that the pieces cannot be removed since they have relocated to areas of the body considered as too risky for surgical removal. This situation can present uncertainty and leave the patient vulnerable to future medical and other health complications that they will potentially deal with for the rest of their lives.
