Florida Developer Could Owe Big Money If 100 Year Old Tree Dies In Attempt To Move

Nine years after city commissioner approval, a 99-year-old, 7 story tall tree has just been successfully moved to its new home.

Fort Lauderdale, FL, USA – October 7, 2022

Having only been moved a relatively short distance away at 200 feet, a century-old tree along the Tarpon River awaits to be planted again, and is causing controversy in the meantime. The tree waits pending the construction of a seawall that can retain the tree’s weight against the furious storms Florida faces. Locals want to see the tree planted again, “safe” back in the ground, while the city arborist & tree experts hired by the developer know that the tree doesn’t have much a chance without the proper preparation of its new home. The professionals hired by the development team, Environmental Design, Inc. are famous for moving trees older and far larger than the Rain Tree of Fort Lauderdale, all using their patented Arborlift process that preserves tree roots and the soil surrounding it.

Until the day it can be planted, both EDI and City arborists will ensure the soil beneath the tree is properly maintained, hydrated, and cared for. Further, it will be anchored and secured in a manner more secure than even its own roots in the ground.

This is not only necessary for the health of the tree itself, but as part of the agreement with the city. Cymbal Development must pay the city $1,000,000 if the cherished tree dies within 3 years of it being moved. This is a stipulation that is both a part of a 1987 City Commission declaration and of the broader agreement to build Raintree Riverwalk Residences, a set of two towers along the river hosting high-end apartments, dining, and shopping.

Those opposed to moving the tree for fear of its health have been vocal about wanting to get the tree planted right away. Local activists have butted heads with the city and developers, and have made themselves heard online. Florida politicians and the development teams have pushed back in their own ways. Even the 3rd party Environmental Design, Inc. prepared a video on the Fort Lauderdale Rain Tree move project that tackles some of the concerns these people have.
