The annual National Night Out, which aims to create partnerships between police and communities, is celebrated in Washington, DC, with drug education booths in all police districts

Washington, DC, USA – August 14, 2024 /MarketersMEDIA/

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World’s DC Chapter distributed its award-winning Truth About Drugs program materials during National Night Out in the nation’s capital. Volunteers in their iconic Drug-Free World shirts participated in all of DC’s police districts, reaching thousands of citizens and answering questions about specific drugs and their effects.

National Night Out is nationwide a police-sponsored event whose purpose is to encourage communities to work and live in harmony together with their police.

According to the Department of Justice, “drug users in the general population are more likely than nonusers to commit crimes.” In fact, the Department of Justice statistics show that 26.1% of those using alcohol, cannabis, and cocaine admitted to committing violent crimes.

Citing drugs as a key factor in many crimes, Thalia Ghiglia, faith liaison for the foundation, shared, “Education is key in helping reduce the drug problem which in many cases leads to an uptrend in crime. Fentanyl and other synthetic drugs continue to plague the DC metro area with too many overdoses. Our youth all need to be educated about drugs.”

Much fun was had by National Night Out attendees who enjoyed bounce houses, inflatable slides, police horses, displays of police vehicles and much music and entertainment.

One of the biggest rewards for the Drug-Free World volunteers was hearing a large number of youth say, “I don’t do drugs,” when seeing the drug education booklets. Those youth were proud to announce their drug-free status and intention to stay away from drugs.

The Foundation for a Drug-Free World works in coalition with government agencies, police, other drug-education programs, churches, teachers and parents, to educate youth to stay drug-free.

Started in 1984 and celebrated on the first Tuesday of August, National Night Out promotes a spirit of partnership between police and their communities while involving all in crime-prevention activities. Each Washington, DC, police district held its own National Night Out event.

The Truth About Drugs program materials empower youth and adults with the facts so they can make informed decisions and avoid the tragedy of drug addiction.

The Truth About Drugs booklet makes the point that drugs are not the solution: “Difficult as it may be to face one’s problems, the consequences of drug use are always worse than the problem one is trying to solve with them.”

Evidence-based studies have shown that when young people are provided with true information about drugs, usage rates drop.

Drug-Free World volunteers partner with the Metropolitan Police Department in DC by providing drug education materials and presentations to help prevent drug abuse, which is key to reducing crime.
