Finding confidence as a preteen can be extremely difficult. Not only are the bodies and emotions of preteens experiencing a great deal of change, but more than ever, social pressures tend to become confusing and overwhelming.

When kids don’t know how to navigate these pressures and find their voice, they can get into trouble, becoming involved in bullying, stealing, cheating, cutting class, smoking, drinking, drugs, vandalism and online drama. And these problems can look different in each child, making it a complex and challenging issue with no single solution.

Enter I’m Strong “I Speak.”

“This program fights fire with fire,” explains Jonathan Krell, a Washington, DC attorney, youth advocate and guardian ad litem. “I developed this speaker series to elicit, publish and celebrate the natural positivity of kids.”

I’m Strong “I Speak” uses immediate audience feedback to help kids see the way others are reacting to the same pressures. With this anonymous form of polling, each attendee receives a clicker to answer questions throughout the presentation. The answers instantly direct the action as attendees are presented with tricky social scenarios.

The engaging, interactive method steers clear of typical boring lecture formats. Instead, the kids actually teach the lessons in a fun, fast-paced, multi-media structure.

In order to help pay for the production and marketing costs associated with creating his new program, Krell recently launched a fundraiser on Kickstarter. There, he hopes to raise $250,000 through crowdfunding.

“The program will be so crazy, so fun, so effective and so memorable that kids will likely feel a little more confident to speak against the negativity, especially when the heat is on,” says Krell.
