Invokana Lawsuit Claim Draws Public Attention To Drug’s Possible Severe Kidney Side Effects
March 07, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com discusses information recently released concerning common adverse event reports which were issued to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration potentially linking new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana to serious and potentially life-threatening kidney damage risks among patients using the drug. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, who receives these and other adverse event reports, over 50 have been made linking the drug to the potential development of renal impairment and kidney failure among patients. These 50 reports were from the drug’s first year on the market only.
Invokana was the first of a group of several similar drugs released to market known as SGLT2 class inhibitors. Invokana works to help type 2 diabetes patients manage their blood sugar levels by preventing the kidneys from absorbing extra glucose and then using them to remove that sugar from the body through urination. This is a process which obviously depends heavily on the kidneys and increases their day-to-day functioning significantly. Because diabetes is already difficult on the kidneys, this added stress can cause them some serious damage.
Pyelonephritis is a term for kidney infections. These infections can be life-threatening and occur when a virus or bacteria are able to enter the kidney area. They can quickly lead to the development of kidney disease or complete kidney failure, and are therefore very dangerous. Unfortunately, damage sustained to the kidneys cannot be repaired, so those who suffer from kidney failure require complete kidney transplants.
Patients using Invokana or other SGLT2 class inhibitor drugs are being asked by the FDA to remain very aware of any signs of kidney damage. These signs can include fatigue, itchy skin, nausea, appetite and weight loss, headaches, and dry patches of skin.
Invokana has also been linked to kidney problems in a report issued by The Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in their May 2015 QuarterWatch publication. It discussed connections made by patients taking Invokana who had suffered more than 457 serious health problems within just one year’s time. 54 of these reported events discussed kidney failure or renal impairment among patients.
