Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Seeks $10 Million After Drug Allegedly Caused Development Of Diabetic Ketoacidosis

April 01, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on another lawsuit which has been filed against new generation type-2 diabetes drug Invokana and manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson corporation). The plaintiff filing the complaint is a woman from Texas who claims that the defendant is responsible for the serious injuries she suffered, including a potentially life-threatening condition called diabetic ketoacidosis. Her lawsuit was filed in New Jersey, and she now requests over $10 million in compensatory pay for her injuries as well as past and future medical bills.

Details from court documents indicate that the plaintiff began taking Invokana in October of 2013 after being prescribed the drug by a physician to treat her type-2 diabetes. Invokana works by helping patients to manage their blood sugar (glucose) levels. To do this, the drug blocks the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar and instead uses them to remove that sugar from the body through urination.

The plaintiff claims that after taking Invokana for a short time, she suddenly suffered from serious injuries, including kidney damage and diabetic ketoacidosis. She states that her kidney damage is severe and irreparable, and maintains that when she realized she had developed these medical complications, she stopped all use of the drug only one month after starting it, in November of 2013.

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a condition that is caused when the body’s bloodstream develops excess toxic acid (ketones). It can cause patients to become comatose or even die if misdiagnosed or untreated. Both this condition and kidney damage have been linked to Invokana use among patients through adverse event reports to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
