IVC Filter Lawsuit Cases Rise, As Allegations Made That Devices Have Potential To Fracture And Migrate
July 02, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on IVC filters and the alleged risks associated with using them. IVC filters are small, cage-like devices that are implanted into patients who are susceptible to the formation of blood clots and usually in patients who cannot use traditional blood-thinning drugs. The medical devices are placed in the patient’s Inferior Vena Cava vein which moves blood from the lower body to the heart and lungs. The device is meant to capture blood clots and hold them until they naturally dissipate, thus preventing them from reaching the heart or lungs. If a clot reaches the lungs a pulmonary embolism could result or other serious medical issues could ensue.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recently issued a public safety reminder about the use of IVC filters. The FDA has stated that the filters are meant to be used on a temporary basis until the threat of blood clots and possible pulmonary embolism passes. The communication reminds medical professionals and patients who have them implanted into their bodies that the devices should ideally be removed within 29-54 days.
A number of patients have reported that the filter has migrated to another part of the body or has actually fractured, thus sending pieces to travel through the bloodstream. As the pieces move through the body there is a potential danger that they could puncture veins or the pieces could become embedded into vital organs or intestines.
Unfortunately for some patients, they have been told by their doctors that the pieces cannot be removed since they have migrated and settled in parts of the body considered as too “high risk” for surgical removal. This presents long-term issues for the patient. Many lawsuits have been filed by patients alleging that they have been placed in this dangerous situation.
