IVC Lawsuit Plaintiffs Anxiously Await Court Date, While Expected IVC Filter Lawsuit Case Total Increases

July 03, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on the use of IVC filters and the increasing number of lawsuits being filed against various manufacturers of the devices by patients who claim that the devices are dangerous and defectively designed.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved IVC filters in 1979 and have become a widely used device. By 2007, 167,000 devices had been implanted versus only 2,000 implanted 1979. The filters are small, cage-like devices that are implanted in patients who cannot take traditional blood-thinning medications but are prone to the development of blood clots. The filters capture clots emanating in the lower body before they can travel to the heart and lungs. If a clot did reach these vital organs it could cause a pulmonary embolism or other serious health consequences. IVC filters are meant to be used as a temporary solution and should be removed when the risk of clots is no longer present.

Some patients claim that the devices have fractured and the pieces have traveled in their bloodstream to other locations in the body. The pieces can potentially become lodged in vital organs or the intestines and can puncture veins and blood vessels as well. Any of these situations could cause very serious damage. A number of plaintiffs have stated that the pieces could not be removed and have been left in their bodies due to migration to what doctors consider “high risk” areas upon which surgery cannot be performed.
