Jazz music pianist, composer, Dallas-based John A. Lewis celebrates the release of his ninth jazz CD on the Valarteri Jazz label, “The Backstory” which features Merik Gillett on drums and Robert Trusko on bass and ten original jazz compositions.

Dallas, TX – Jazz music pianist, composer, Dallas-based John A. Lewis (John A. Lewis website) celebrates the release of his ninth jazz CD on the Valarteri Jazz label, “The Backstory” which features ten original compositions in an eclectic mix of Jazz, Blues and R&B and follows his most recent recording One Trip Out, which reached number eight on the CMJ chart. Accompanying Mr. Lewis, who composed the music for all ten tracks (“Backstory,” “Deadline,” “Jacked,” “Complicity,” “Bylines,” “Liable,” “Precocity,” “Excerpt from the ‘Ancient Dance Suite’”, “What Say I,” “A Cautionary Ruse”) is Merik Gillett on drums and Robert Trusko on bass. John A. Lewis is a native of Dallas Texas. He studied trumpet at Mountain View Junior College and Southern Methodist University. Growing up in a family of music industry professionals in the jazz world, Mr. Lewis grew up listening to and being around such influential musical artists as James Moody, Johnnie Taylor, Ray Charles, as well as Dallas area musicians Etta James, David Newman and James Clay – with the latter three also having been booked promoted and managed by his father John Sr. and grandfather Howard Lewis. Mr. Lewis is a former student of noted jazz educator Dr. Thom Mason and the late local pianist composer Claude Johnson Jr. After performing in R&B and top 40 bands as a trumpet player, John switched to piano and has since focused on performing and composing jazz. He draws his musical influences from Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Wayne Shorter and classical composers Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel and Eric Satie. As the leader of the John A. Lewis trio and quartet, his groups keep busy in the Dallas area and have performed at the South Dallas Cultural Center, the Sammons Center for the Arts, the Dallas Museum of the Art: Jazz In The Atrium series and music festivals, clubs and restaurants throughout the Dallas and Fort Worth area.
