Each week Kensington residents and supporters of The Way to Happiness are taking to the streets to clean up the filth and trash and improve their environment. This past Saturday was a special occasion, as they were joined by a group of Community Policing Forum Youth Desk members from Orange Farm who want to safeguard and improve their area as well.
Together, they toiled for hours side by side, to clean up the main parts of the Kensington business district to tackle the overflowing rubbish.
According to Nicola Khoury, the head of the Kensington volunteer group, they want to improve Kensington and set a good example that the rest of the community can follow.
“This is our home and we care about what is around us. We will not stand quietly when our home is being destroyed by the careless actions of others. We set a good example by taking responsibility and not waiting for someone else to fix it,” said Khoury.
While the group has been also distributing copies of The Way to Happiness in and around the area, they are using the information themselves to safeguard and improve their environment and setting a good example, which are precepts from the booklet on commonsense guide to better living.
After the work was done for the day, the volunteers had a briefing from Shaleen Wohrnitz, of The Way to Happiness, South Africa on encouraging more community members to do clean ups.
According to Wohrnitz, The Way to Happiness has been used to reduce crime rates in some of the worst crime-ridden places on the planet.
She mentioned Colombia, a country which was so dangerous, it was on the dangerous travel list. After an extensive, national campaign or seminars for police, army, schools and organizations flanked by the distribution of many thousands of The Way to Happiness booklets, the crime rate dropped by 50%.
In South Africa, after large distributions of the booklets were done in Sharpeville, SAPS reported a 38% drop in crime. In the Philippines, it was reported that crime dropped by 37%.
“Using the information contained in this booklet will result in people making decisions which are not harmful to themselves or others. We start treating people the way we want to be treated, and then, right before your eyes, things start changing for the better,” said Wohrnitz.
The Way to Happiness is a non-religious, non-political, common sense guide to better living, written by L. Ron Hubbard. Its 21 principles, which are easily applied, empowers people with knowledge that helps them make better choices in life, choices which bring greater happiness.
“You can achieve much more with this book than clean streets – you can get morals and ethics into communities and even lower crime rates.” Concluded Wohrnitz.
Community groups are encouraged to start their own clean-up campaigns in their neighborhoods.
The Gauteng Province is dedicated to creating a clean place, this backs up the BontleKeBotho cleanup campaign launched by the Premier of Gauteng recently.
