Lack of Bike Maintenance Leads to Hundreds of Deaths a Year
One expert claims that a simple all in one tool can drastically reduce the number of bicycle accidents and other mishaps.

According to the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, 743 people die every year in the United States as a result of riding their bicycle. In addition to those who lose their lives in bicycle crashes, almost 19,000 suffer injuries, and of those almost 3,000 are seriously injured. And while some of these injuries are a result from vehicle drivers not seeing the bicyclists, or the bikers pulling out in front of cars, that only accounts for about 16 percent of the injuries or deaths. A good amount of the accidents happen because the bicycle has not been properly maintained, and that lack of care causes the rider to lose control of the bicycle.
“It’s sad that so many people are injured or killed every year because of something as simple as bike maintenance,” says one retailer of an all in tool that many bicyclists use. “Too many bicycles are in disrepair—or become that way on the road—because cyclists don’t want to lug around a big box full of tools when they go on a ride. It’s the biggest reason our bicycle repair tool has become so popular among that population.”
In addition to the reported deaths and accidents, expert believe that many minor bike accidents go unreported as people tend to care for these types of injuries themselves. For instance, road rash, which is a result of abrasions to the skin that come from frictional contact with the pavement or pebbled ground when a cyclist falls off their bike. The second type of minor injury is delayed onset muscle soreness, and it typically doesn’t manifest for a few hours after the fall.
“Something as simple as making sure the tires have the correct pressure and enough tread, or making sure the spokes are tight enough can make a huge difference in how a bicycle performs,” says the retailer. “But you can’t make those types of adjustments while out on the road unless you have the proper tools with you. But how realistic is it for cyclists to strap a large box of tools to their bike when riding?”
“The goal is to reduce the amount of people who are injured every year while riding a bicycle. And the fact is that injuries have increased, not decreased. We just want to get the word out to bicyclists everywhere: if your bike is maintained, your chances of being in an accident go down.”
