A life-changing event inspired Dr. Brian Nathanson to train as a chiropractor to relieve the pain of a wide range of patients — from “weekend warriors” to breast cancer survivors.
Ridgefield, United States – November 14, 2018 /PressCable/ —
(NORWALK, CT – November 13, 2018) One common theme unites the vast spectrum of patients who have turned to Norwalk based chiropractor Dr. Brian K. Nathanson over the years – a desire for greater movement and freedom. The countless breast cancer survivors, high school athletes and even the “weekend warriors” who seek Dr. Nathanson’s help in reclaiming more flexibility all credit him with helping them attain a better, pain-free quality of life and the chance to “get in the game.” Not surprisingly, the motto which he brings to his work at New England Physical Care every day is an all-embracing one. “If it moves,” he says, “we treat it!”
What many of Dr. Nathanson’s patients may not know, however, is that his dedication to easing their aches and pains is the result of a dramatic change in career inspired by a health crisis affecting his daughter. When his daughter Marni was only two years old, she had begun having frequent seizures. Brian Nathanson and his wife Penny were desperate to find a solution. “Traditional medical measures seemed to treat only the symptoms,” he says, “not the underlying cause of the ailment.” He turned to Dr. Viola Frymann, a well-respected osteopath based in San Diego, whose work made a difference for the entire family.
Brian Nathanson – who had followed his father and grandfather into the family printing business – decided that he wanted to help others as the remarkable Dr. Frymann had helped young Marni. “I wanted to make a difference in people’s lives and give others the same gift my family received. I decided to pursue a career in chiropractic medicine.”
With the opening of his own practice – New England Physical Care – in Norwalk, Connecticut in 2008, Dr. Nathanson began to focus on the treatment of soft tissue injuries, muscular and joint-related discomfort, post-surgical mobility therapies, scar tissue and related chronic pain issues. From the beginning, many of his patients have been those with a passion for sports like golf and tennis – “weekend warriors” – who were troubled by a lack of flexibility and mobility. Other patients who were in pain because of a sprained ankle or bad back sought Dr. Nathanson’s help. Through his unique therapeutic approach, he was successful in restoring flexibility and mobility, and relief from pain, within just a few sessions. Young athletes – high school students who over-training for various sports – also came to him for help. Other patients were recovering from surgery or tired of nagging injuries or knew that a greater range of motion could help them take their game to the next level.
The Graston Technique and EPAT
Dr. Nathanson uses a number of disciplines designed to mitigate and fully alleviate pain in the least invasive manner possible. He primarily employs two state-of-the-art techniques, Graston and EPAT, to achieve remarkable results for his patients. Dr. Nathanson’s patients typically recover quickly with little discomfort, and generally do not require long term continual care, but instead can be treated as needed after the initial issues have been resolved. He says that his goal is to provide his patients with lasting relief as quickly as possible and is not interested in a “revolving-door practice” that asks patients to return for many treatment sessions.
Dr. Nathanson is certified in The Graston Technique, an approach that utilizes a specialized set of machined instruments to help identify and remedy an affected area by breaking down scar tissue and reducing inflammation. Through a series of gentle cross-fiber massage treatments, adhesions, restrictions, and scar tissue are eventually eradicated and free movement restored. He says that The Graston Technique “can provide relief for a broad range of ailments including TMJ, carpal tunnel syndrome, knees, hips, sciatica, tennis elbow, lower back, and shoulder issues.”
One treatment modality featured at New England Physical Care to treat a wide range of chronic and acute injuries is EPAT — Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technologies. EPAT uses a sonic applicator to generate a unique set of pressure pulses (high energy sound waves) to penetrate deep though soft tissue in a non-invasive manner. These pulses stimulate the patient’s metabolism, break up persistent scar tissue and adhesions that can cause pain and hamper range of motion, enhance blood circulation in injured areas and accelerate the healing process.
Both the Graston Technique and EPAT have been cleared by the FDA, and countless patients have found them to be helpful in restoring mobility and providing relief from pain.
Providing Care for Breast Cancer Survivors
Dr. Nathanson discovered that female patients who had undergone mastectomy surgery for the treatment of breast cancer also found that they became immobile, just like athletes, and he began to work with them. His fist post-mastectomy patient told him felt her that her life was transformed, thanks to his work. After working with Dr. Nathanson, she said, “the results were phenomenal. After only a few treatments, I had regained much of my lost mobility. This made a tremendous difference in my life.” “The opportunity to make such a profound difference in the lives of breast cancer survivors is the most fulfilling work I have ever experienced,” Dr. Nathanson says.
Whether he is helping “weekend warriors” play a better game on the tennis court or golf course, or helping breast cancer survivors reclaim the flexibility and mobility they feared may have been lost forever, Dr. Brian Nathanson remains grateful that he chose to make a career shift many years ago. “I have been fortunate in being able to provide relief for these people who have faced so many challenges,” he says. “It is extremely gratifying.”
