Medicare Advantage Plan Enrollment Expected to Rise in 2018-19

Boomer Benefits and Danielle K Roberts are pleased to announce that Kaiser Family Foundation in 2017 has updated information about enrollment in Medicare Advantage plans. It has been steadily increasing since 2004. One in three Medicare beneficiaries is enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan.
Medicare insurance expert Danielle K Roberts of Boomer Benefits says this steady growth in enrollment has a lot to do with increasing Medicare premiums and deductibles. “Medicare premiums have continued to rise over the last ten years, and so has the cost of traditional Medigap plans. Many beneficiaries are living on fixed incomes and there sometimes comes a point where they simply can’t afford the out-of-pocket expenses anymore,” said Roberts, whose agency specializes in Medicare insurance products.
Medicare Advantage plans are a form of private insurance that provides Part A and B health services to beneficiaries, sometimes with extra benefits included such as vision exams and gym memberships. Members typically seek treatment with the plan’s network providers. If further cuts to Medicare entitlements occur in 2018, then deductibles and cost-sharing for seniors in original Medicare will likely increase. Roberts said this makes Medicare Advantage plans an increasingly attractive alternative to many beneficiaries.
“We usually find that most of our Medicare insurance clients prefer Medigap plans at the outset,” said Roberts, “but as premiums for both Medicare and their supplemental insurance keep going up each year, we get more and more calls from clients wanting to explore Medicare Advantage options.”
Many major insurance carriers, such as Aetna Medicare, now offer Medicare Advantage plans as well as Medicare supplements plans in various states around the nation. Mutual of Omaha recently announced it will also enter the Medicare Advantage market in 2019.
Medicare beneficiaries wishing to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan must do so during a valid enrollment. Roberts said beneficiaries must also live in the plan’s service area and be enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B.
