New Contest For Tweens Puts Focus On Distracted Walking

The National Road Safety Foundation launches, with We Are Teachers, “Walk Safe, Drive Safe” PSA Contest with $2,500 top prize

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / October 13, 2015 / A new nationwide contest to engage tweens in grades 3 – 5 in the dialogue about distracted driving and distracted walking has just launched.

Sponsored by The National Road Safety Foundation, a non-profit group that promotes safe driving through education, the Tweens2Teens Walk Safe, Drive Safe PSA Contest invites kids and teachers in Grades 3 – 5 to develop a visual message – a poster, photo essay, storyboard or any combination of visual formats – to talk to teens and all drivers and pedestrians about safe, distraction-free driving and walking.

One class will win $2,500 for their school, and two runners-up will each receive a $1,500 prize for their schools.

Deadline for entries is December 18, 2015.

“Young people are becoming aware of the dangers of distracted driving long before they begin to drive, and many of the same distraction issues apply to walking,” said Michelle Anderson, Director of Operations at The National Road Safety Foundation. “And we have found that older kids, especially driving-age teens, tend to listen to their younger siblings and peers. It’s a form of reverse-mentorship we call Tweens2Teens.”

Traffic crashes are the leading cause of death for young people 18 and under, and distraction by cellphones and texting is becoming a major contributor. Pedestrian incidents, including those involving cars, are responsible for hundreds of thousands of injuries every year.

The Tweens2Teens Walk Safe, Drive Safe PSA Contest is being promoted by WeAreTeachers, the powerful online teacher resource.

“Pedestrian, driver, and passenger safety is an important issue for schools and communities,” said Hannah Hudson, editorial director of WeAreTeachers. “Every student deserves to have a safe trip to school, and we know that kids and teachers will rally behind preventing distracted driving and walking.”
