New School Set to Launch in Carlisle District This Fall
Carlisle, PA – August 2, 2022 —
Joining with the Association of Classical Christian Schools (ACCS), Logos School is set to launch in South Middleton School District in Carlisle this Fall for the 20222023 academic year. Teaching Kindergarten through sixth grade in space rented from Carlisle Evangelical Free Church at 290 Petersburg Road in South Middleton Township, the school is currently enrolling students prior to the September 6 start date. An informational meeting and tour of the school will be held Wednesday, August 17 at 6:15 pm.
With Corey and Julie Gelbaugh at the helm, Logos School is partnering with an all-star team to set the school – and students – up for both educational and faith-based success.
“As our oldest daughter approached school age, God brought about in us an overwhelming sense that we needed to ground her perspective on the world in an authority greater than our own,” says Corey, President of the Logos Board. “We wanted to give her what we did not have – a Christcentered education with Jesus Christ (the Logos), in Whom all of life coheres, as the Foundation. Naming God in the classroom as the source of and unifying principle for all knowledge is the only way to introduce meaning and value to the learning process. We saw in the ACCS a stance toward the culture that was not simply ‘we are not that,’ but a positive presentation of the Christian worldview, clearly distinguished by its commitment to recognizing God as the sole, unchanging standard of truth, goodness, and even beauty.”
Representing nearly 400 member and accredited schools, ACCS seeks to set an educational standard for a unified and directed approach to classical and Christian learning, offering an extensive array of member services to help build distinctive schools and providing accountability through accreditation. Founded in 1994, ACCS is the largest and most widely recognized representative of classical Christian education: a time-tested educational system which establishes a biblical worldview, incorporates methods based on natural phases of student development, cultivates Christian virtues, trains student reasoning through grammar, logic and rhetoric and interacts with the historical great books.
Julie, Head of Logos School, explains further, “Classical education takes learning back to how it was practiced prior to the progressive movement early in the 20th century when schools switched from a liberal arts education to job training. It builds a foundation on sharpening student’s reasoning, language and rhetorical skills, while keeping Christ at the center. I’m excited to be a part of a learning environment where teachers and students are driven by the desire to glorify God in all we do, which I know will enable us to create and sustain this educational model within our local community.”
With backgrounds in education – Julie a speech language pathologist working in the special education department in the public school system, and Corey a web developer in the education field who has built several educational applications – the Gelbaughs have pulled from their wide community of contacts to provide direction for Logos.
Two experienced teachers have been appointed as Directors of Curriculum and Instruction to set the educational standard for the school and to help guide Logos School’s team of educators. Denise Eschenmann is a National Board Certified teacher and PA Teacher of the Year finalist with 38 years of experience in teaching fifth grade, mentoring teachers, and providing professional development in math and other areas in Carlisle and other districts throughout her career. Debbie Harris-Heishman is a 35 year veteran having taught kindergarten through third grade and was the recipient of the Matz Award for Excellence.
“It has been an honor to be asked to fill this role for Logos School and for the community,” explains Eschenmann. “I retired at the end of this past school year, having had a wonderful career, but to step in to help build the foundation of this school and mentor its teachers seems like the perfect next step. Debbie and I are committed to creating a positive atmosphere where children are met where they are in their individual academic and life journey and given the tools and resources needed to help bring out their best, providing them with every avenue to live out their potential.”
With the benefit of small class sizes and individualized attention, Logos is currently enrolling students from K-6, with additional grades being added next year. When the school is teaching K-12, it will reach full accreditation with the ACCS.
The public is invited to attend an informational meeting and school tour on Wednesday, August 17 at 6:15 pm at Carlisle Evangelical Free Church to learn more about the school, meet the Gelbaughs, Eschenmann, Harris-Heishman and others. Registration is encouraged, but not required.
