Local historian and former police detective John F. Wake is launching his brand new book, “Horrors of the Dead House – Policing the Streets of Old Cardiff”. The book is set to go live 31 July 2019, available Wordcatcher.com, Amazon, and other online retailers and is expected to become a big hit with readers of local history, the history of policing, and Victorian crime.

More information on the book can be found here: https://www.wordcatcher.com/john-f-wake/horrors-of-the-dead-house

This is the sixth book F. Wake has authored. The book was written to reveal the injustices bestowed upon the poor of Victorian Cardiff. There’s also particular excitement about this launch because it reveals forgotten stories of Cardiff and streets long-gone, and some surprises even for those who know Cardiff history well.

Horrors of the Dead House – Policing the Streets of Old Cardiff sets its main focus on a varied collection of stories researched by the author from contemporary sources. Readers will find particular interest in the first police station on Bute Street that seems forgotten and goes without comment in local history circles. Horrors of the Dead House – Policing the Streets of Old Cardiff is being released by Wordcatcher Publishing.

John F. Wake has a background as a former police detective and he is an obsessive researcher. This helped shaped the creation of the book as he saw at first hand the injustices meted out to those on the wrong side of the city.

When asked about why he wrote the book, John F. Wake said: “I like to uncover stories about real, everyday people. This isn’t a book about the likes of the Bute family, it’s about characters that would otherwise pass into history unremembered. It records the poverty and responses to that poverty that inevitably arose – crime, addiction… and murder.”

John hopes readers will look at the streets around them, whether in Cardiff or further afield, and consider who has taken the same steps and the stories those streets could tell.

In a recent interview, the author made a point of thanking the many people who have assisted with research, named in the book and gratefully acknowledged. for their part in the creation of the book, adding: “The positive reviews of readers of my earlier books, and those who have attended my talks, drives me on to tell more stories of old Cardiff.”
