Creative Empowerment Series Debuts With America’s #1 Independent Blogger

The Greater Jackson Arts Council (GJAC) is launching a new program—Creative Empowerment—in partnership with Visit Jackson.

The series launches Thursday, February 16 with Awesomely Luvvie LIVE! featuring a special evening keynote from New York Times bestselling author Luvvie Ajayi (I’m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual). Luvvie is a Nigerian-born social media sensation with the most popular independent blog in the country. Her razor-sharp, firebrand wit and intolerance for foolish behavior has made her a go-to social critic on a wide array of issues including pop culture, politics, race, and dating rituals.

The Creative Empowerment initiative is aimed toward enlightening and inspiring the community through visiting speaker events and workshops emphasizing artistic expression, entrepreneurship and personal agency. “Luvvie is the perfect headliner to introduce this series,” Jon Salem, GJAC Assistant Director said. “She’s a young, ambitious, media savvy presence with a strong point of view and a great deal of wisdom to share.”

Luvvie will also be addressing 150+ high school students from across the Metro Jackson area on the subject of “Maintaining A Clean Online Reputation” at a special afternoon workshop hosted by GJAC. Seven JPS high schools will be represented, as well as students from Hartfield Academy, Jackson Academy, Jackson Prep and St. Andrews Episcopal School. “I’m proud to be part of an organization offering this type of content to young people,” Stacey Ferreri, GJAC Board President said. “Now more than ever, it’s imperative that we advocate to students how perilous the social media terrain can be. Poor decisions made today in that arena can impact their lives for years.”

Tickets for the Awesomely Luvvie LIVE! evening keynote and Hot Topics panel featuring local thought leaders are available online HERE. General admission seats are $18 each and the Extra Luvvie VIP Experience (including a VIP reception with Luvvie and a copy of her new bestselling book) is $50.

GJAC is a private nonprofit with a mission to value diversity by increasing cultural access and opportunities through grant offerings, special events, venue management and arts marketing. Public sector supporters include Visit Jackson, City of Jackson, Mississippi Arts Commission and Hinds County Board of Supervisors.
