Pro-Pesticide Lobby Pushes Bill to Prevent States from Restricting Pesticides

A Bill that could increase cancer risks for consumers in California and beyond

The act would prevent states from tailoring laws more restrictive than requirements set by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many of these local laws aim to protect vulnerable populations such as schoolchildren and farm workers.

Since the EPA — in contrast to the World Health Organization and other organizations — concluded that glyphosate is not a human carcinogen, this bill would prevent states from requiring cancer warnings on products such as Roundup.

“I am opposed to passage of the Agricultural Labeling Uniformity Act,” says Jeffrey Nadrich, lead partner for Nadrich & Cohen. “For the protection of its citizens, a state should have the right to enact more stringent standards than those adopted by federal agencies.”

“It is my opinion that federal standards in regards to such matters serve as a floor not a ceiling. In many instances, states should be able to adopt regulatory standards above their federal counterparts.”
