Santa Monica Personal Injury Attorney Offers Advice On What To Do After An Accident
Accidents happen. What happens after the accident is very important, said Santa Monica personal injury attorney Natalie Bausch.
Santa Monica, CA, United States – November 3, 2016 /MarketersMedia/ —
“Get calm. Yes, I know this can be hard and it may feel impossible, but you have to get calm. You can’t make good decisions when you are really upset,” she said. “It doesn’t matter what kind of accident, car, a fall, whatever. You need to be calm so you can make the best decisions.”
At the same time, check for injuries. This is as important, and sometimes more important, than staying calm, Ms. Bausch said. Checking for injuries can be the difference between a something minor treated very quickly and major problems that result because of not getting treated, she said.
“If you think you or someone else is hurt, call for the ambulance. It’s better to be safe than sorry later,” she said. “Let the emergency room doctors do their work.”
Depending on what the accident is, call law enforcement. Ms. Bausch said any kind of car accident, no matter how minor, needs an official report from someone in law enforcement. If it is a fall or other accident, calling the police is still a good idea. She said the police are supposed to write a report any time they are called. Whether that report will help later is something to be decided later, she said.
Don’t sign anything unless it is for the police.
“This is very important. You may be signing away rights. That is a big mistake. Only sign papers presented by law enforcement. You’re asked to sign just to say that you were present and the information you gave, your name and so forth, is correct. Later on, your insurance company may ask you to sign papers. If you don’t understand the papers, do not sign. Get help to explain the paperwork,” she said.
Get help once the emergency is over. Ms. Bausch has plenty of experience dealing with accidents and insurance companies. She is ready to be an advocate for someone who was injured in an accident of any kind.
