Sri Chinmoy – on Becoming Fulfilled Through Meditation on the Heart

NEW YORK, NY / ACCESSWIRE / August 31, 2017 / With written records of meditative practice dating back to 1500 BCE (tied to the Hindu tradition of Vedantism in India) and now as Time Magazine reports a marked, recent increase in the same across the US, both secular and spiritual societies around the world continue to embrace and espouse the many indisputable benefits of meditation. Peer-reviewed scientific studies have repeatedly proven that regular, introspective contemplation contributes directly to: increased brain function (cognition) and attentiveness, body satisfaction, reduced anxiety, stress or depression among other positive outputs.

Renowned and celebrated guru Sri Chinmoy was a devoted advocate of internal and external meditation, advising his disciples to seek fulfilment both through the insight and tranquility of quiet reflection as well as through physical fitness and self-challenges. As a teacher and influential spiritual advisor to thousands of students in more than 60 countries, Chinmoy explains that inner and outer peace can be achieved more effectively through focused meditation on the ‘heart’, rather than the mind. He describes the mind as a busy place-like ‘Times Square on New Year’s Eve’ where it is highly difficult to escape the noise of the mind, whereas the heart ‘is like a lonely cave in the Himalayas’ which offers silent purity and boundless self-discovery.

An estimated 18 million American alone used meditation in 2012, according to a poll by the National Health Interview Survey, with many reporting it as an effective method of staying grounded and reducing health complications. Sri Chinmoy sees it as a crucial tool for insulation against the many distractions technologies such as smart phones and tablets offer. Intensive industries such as the financial markets on Wall Street also recognize the value as CNN Money reports, with hedge funds and capital firms attributing meditative practice to direct increases in profit by influencing employees to remain neutral and focused in the midst of stressful conditions.

Beyond purely cerebral/spiritual benefits, the ‘relaxation response’ of meditation results in
measurable physiological changes: an improved immune system, increased blood flow to skeletal structures, reductions in inflammation, oxygen consumption and blood pressure. Sri Chinmoy used this to his advantage- running over 22 marathons and demonstrating an ability for performing incredible feats of strength (at the age of 54 he took up weightlifting) and urging his 7000+ disciples to channel their own abilities into challenging “self-transcendence” endeavors.

Born in Shakpura, India in 1931, Sri Chinmoy established his first “meditation centre” (they now number over 350 across the globe) in the United States in the 1960s. He has written more than 1,500 books, 22,000 songs and some of his more than 16 million “Soul Bird” drawings have been exhibited at the Louvre in Paris and the United Nations in New York, where he also delivered weekly meditation sessions since the invitation of Secretary-General U Thant in 1970. His lecture series have been hosted at venerable institutions such as Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Princeton and he has attracted the support and veneration of countless world leaders and other inspirational figures, such as Princess Diana, Carl Lewis, Susan Sarandon, Jeff Goldblum, Mikhail Gorbachev, Billie Jean King, Helen Hunt, Nelson Mandela, Mother Teresa, Desmond Tutu, Muhammad Ali and many others.
