Strictly Weddings Discovers USA Marriage Happiness Varies Considerably By State
The wedding directory surveyed over 3,000 people to discover overall marital satisfaction, comparing it to marriage and divorce rates.
United States – August 30, 2023 —
Strictly Weddings, the world’s largest directory of wedding venues and supplies, discovered that USA marriage happiness varies considerably across the country, with partners in some states reporting dramatically higher satisfaction than others. The survey, which recruited over 3,000 participants, offers a unique insight into the geography of love.
“We surveyed couples across the country to find out just how happy they are in marriage,” company executive Mark Garbers said. “The relationship between the amount of satisfaction you feel with your spouse and where you live is unexpected.”
The study followed participants in every state in the U.S. Administrators asked respondents to share how happy they were in their marriages on a scale of 1 to 10 and then averaged the scores to give a total for each state. Washington, D.C., reported the highest overall marital satisfaction score of 9.4, while New Jersey and North Dakota came bottom of the list at 5.
Strictly Weddings also reported marriage and divorce rates along with each happiness score. Interestingly, higher satisfaction levels do not consistently translate into more people getting married or breaking up. In Washington D.C. the divorce rate was 2.10, according to the directory’s latest data, but only 1.70 in New Jersey, suggesting many people stay in unhappy relationships.
Overall, marital satisfaction was high across the board. Most states reported marital happiness scores between 7 and 9, including Alaska (8), Colorado (7.2), Florida (7.5), Illinois (8), Massachusetts (7.6), New Mexico (8), Nevada (8.3), and Texas (7.7). California also scored well, with the average respondent giving their marriage a solid score of 7.9 out of 10.
“The results paint an interesting picture of the marriage situation across the U.S.,” Mark Garbers said. “Using the happiness score in conjunction with marriage and divorce statistics reveals how likely couples are to reach milestone wedding anniversaries.”
The survey comes on the heels of changing marriage dynamics. In 2011, the average marriage rate was 16.3 per 1,000 population but fell to 14.9 by 2021. At the same time, divorce rates also dropped, moving from 9.7 per 1,000 women in 2011 to just 6.9, according to the most recent census data.
