Not long after opening its doors, Sumner Academy’s success allowed the school to take a bold step forward by purchasing a new site and constructing a state-of-the-art campus on 23 acres of picturesque land in the heart of Gallatin, TN. The scenic landscape surrounding the school has inspired countless young minds while allowing the academic structures room to grow and expand.

Sumner Academy’s reputation for excellence grew as well, catching the attention of local luminaries like June Carter and Johnny Cash who, along with the remarkable Barbara Mandrell, entrusted the education of their children to the educators at Sumner Academy.

Over the years, students from Sumner Academy have gone on to win academic accolades at high schools in Gallatin, Hendersonville, and Nashville and attended prestigious universities across the country.

“The faculty at Sumner Academy were dedicated to making sure I learned how to ask the right questions, how to solve problems, and how to think creatively and critically. Those teachers taught me skills that allowed me to succeed and thrive in college and the professional world,” said Chase Cowden, Sumner Academy graduate. Mr. Cowden has chosen to send his children to Sumner Academy to learn these same skills.

In April of 2014, the Tennessee House of Representatives honored Sumner Academy for 40 years of excellence in education in a House Joint Resolution. The resolution was sponsored by local legislators who praised the school’s long dedication to curriculum that emphasized thinking skills, creativity, hands-on learning, and field study trips for students of all ages. These remain steadfast strengths of Sumner Academy to this day.

Guided by the visionary leadership of Headmaster Chan Gammill, Sumner Academy now embarks on an exciting journey of renewal as it commemorates its 50th anniversary. This auspicious occasion is marked by a series of events that celebrate the school’s legacy as well its continued commitment to propelling education into the future.

“Sumner Academy is on a transformative journey this year. The school has received a recent facelift with new paint and roofs, but that’s just the beginning,” said Mr. Gammill.

Plans are in motion to enhance the school’s surroundings with new landscaping and fortified security features at the front gate. In addition, a comprehensive program of interior and infrastructure updates is set to further elevate the learning environment. These enhancements will include revitalizing classrooms in the lower and middle schools with fresh flooring and paint, as well as a revitalized parking lot that ensures both safety and convenience.

Throughout its rich history, Sumner Academy’s pursuit of excellence has been guided by its devoted faculty. Prioritizing improvements in learning spaces, influenced by invaluable faculty feedback, has yielded an approach that recognizes technology as a primary focus. A substantial enhancement initiative includes the installation of cutting-edge AV equipment for the cafetorium and further classroom technology updates, aligning education with the demands of the modern world.
