The Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists (www.CanadianHair.ca), a Toronto-based organization offering hair loss treatment for over 25 years, is addressing a recent case where a man began losing hair due to alcohol.
According to a recent article, a man uploaded images depicting the effects alcoholism had on his life, including weight gain, thinning hair, and a receding hair line. The man, who has chosen to remain nameless, began drinking shortly before graduating high school. He quickly developed a full-blown habit, selling belongings so he could buy more beer. (Meyjes, T., “A man stopped drinking alcohol and this is what happened to his body,” Metro.co.uk, March 20, 2016; http://metro.co.uk/2016/03/20/a-man-stopped-drinking-alcohol-and-this-is-what-happened-to-his-body-5764489/.)
“Our hair is often linked to our overall health,” says Ken Robson, founder of the Canadian Institute of Hair and Scalp Specialists. “There are many potential causes. While it’s true that some people just experience hair loss due to genetics, others have health issues that cause them to lose hair.”
By the man’s second year of college, his hair was already thinning, and by his third year, the hair throughout his scalp had substantially thinned. He also began to suffer from problems with anxiety, depression, and stress, which he believes exacerbated his hair loss.
“Drinking could certainly have an impact on hair, but it’s not the alcohol itself that’s doing the damage,” notes Robson. “If alcohol is causing inflammation or if people are drinking beer instead of eating healthy foods, then health conditions and hair loss can begin to develop. The odd drink or two won’t have an effect, but constant drinking could. Alcoholism can also affect hormone levels.”
Due to the stress and his increasing hair loss, the man said he began to pull out his hair in frustration. After reaching this low point, he decided to finally cut out alcohol for good. Stress is cited as one of the big causes of hair loss, with many studies having confirmed that it does have a big impact on hair.
“Usually, this type of hair loss is just temporary, but that is not always the case,” Robson explains. “Trauma can also cause permanent hair loss and anything which pulls or tugs on the hair can damage the hair follicles. That’s actually a bigger cause of concern than stress, because the resulting hair loss is usually permanent.”
After 1.5 years of being sober, the man now reports that he has experienced dramatic hair regrowth and weight loss, having uploaded the pictures of his recovery from alcoholism to a social news networking site.
“A lot of the time, upon eliminated the problem, hair will grow back on its own,” Robson concludes. “Hair loss can be permanent too, but there are more treatments now than ever before. People with thinning can use specialized shampoos, while those with more extensive hair loss can enjoy a full recovery via a hair transplant. Regardless of the problem or severity, people have many options for their hair loss.”
