Alexandria, VAThe Survivor Legacy Scholarship was initiated in 2021 by Shalvit Grimes to annually award scholarships to students who have experienced challenges that are often overlooked as barriers to success. While in college, Shalvit Grimes became aware of the extent to which students who experienced assault while on college campuses were left with untold financial challenges after reporting the incident(s). This compelled Shalvit to initiate an academic scholarship, with the help of Simone Grimes, to offset the rarely discussed or acknowledged financial challenges that victims of abuse incur. To date The Grimes Charitable Trust has awarded numerous Survivor Legacy Scholarships and it hopes to award more this year.

“Children are the least advocated for members of society. There is no political lobby advocating for their interests, or funding their needs. Youth services are among the first things to get cut in times of economic uncertainty, and the last to get funded during times of economic boom. The Survivor Legacy Scholarship is designed offer hope and resources to students who have suffered through abuse, assault and/or trauma which we know has real financial consequences later in life. Shalvit and I believe that education is a powerful tool for empowering individuals and communities, and we are dedicated to creating opportunities for all students to pursue their academic dreams.”
