The Sister Duo With A New Vision For Education In A Post-COVID World

Sisters Camille and Ilana Goodman are shaking up the educational sector with a new method of online learning, to break down barriers in a post-pandemic future.

United Kingdom – November 17, 2023

When the world was in a state of Covid-induced chaos, it was easy to dwell on problems without offering solutions. Yet, if anything the pandemic taught us, it’s that we can adapt, we need change and this can start with education.

From an increasingly early age, students in the UK are faced with a ceaseless stream of monochrome exam papers, churning out facts and figures, and memorising passages from the Bard. When these exams were cancelled, students forgot why they were learning in the first place.

“When schools closed and tests were called off, we heard no collective cheers or sighs of relief. Students were left in limbo, with no assurance of their future in an exam-less world. It was a clear sign something can be done to enhance our current educational process”, says Ilana, a 31-year-old Cambridge graduate and one of a two-sister partnership with Camille, an Oxford graduate two years her junior. The sisters are the brains behind U2 Tuition, a new-wave company that pushes the educational frontier by empowering students to engage with the world beyond the school walls.

Bright students too often fall through the cracks in our current system which ranks and files them into schools and sets based on examination achievement. The sisters believe more can be done to nurture the intelligence of those who struggle with rote learning, reflect the global, cultural landscape, and pace of change, and open our young generation’s eyes to the immense possibilities available to them in degree subjects and future careers.

This was the mission behind their innovative extra-curricular online learning division, Minds Underground™, a treasure-trove of courses, masterclasses, summer schools, and research opportunities, supporting students’ voyages of discovery into a wide realm of STEM and Humanities subjects – from sustainability, machine learning and astrophysics, to world literature and law.

The initiative was curated alongside their team of 700 Oxbridge graduates, each chosen for their involvement in cutting-edge research, either through master’s and PhD positions or employment at firms such as Google, NASA and the UN Sustainable Development Team. “We had brought together some absolutely extraordinary minds, and we thought, what a waste to restrict them to teaching within the remits of the syllabus”, explains Camille, “our courses are a product of their incredible talents. Sometimes I think we’ve got so many powerful brains involved, we’d make a good recruitment agency for MI6!”, she laughs.

The pandemic inadvertently propelled the sisters’ extra-curricular initiatives into the spotlight. A clear sign of the times, the sisters saw large numbers of students enrol in vocational classes. The ‘Merging Design and Engineering for Impactful Innovation’ workshop was highly popular, as well as online alternatives to COVID-cancelled work experience, such as a Regenerative Medicine project with a researcher at the Cambridge Stem Cell Institute, and a project to code the descent of the Mars Lander robot with a Systems Engineer at Jaguar Land Rover.

“It is not only a more enjoyable, exploratory way of learning”, says Ilana, “instilling intellectual curiosity in both younger students and those in their final school years, is a fast track to success. If a student is striving for a top university, such as Oxbridge, regurgitating the curriculum won’t get them in, straight A*s alone won’t get them in, demonstrating wider knowledge, ability to think on their feet and a genuine passion for their subject will.”
