When asked to comment, Douglas said, “For many years, it was almost always held by courts that child custody should be granted to mothers, which generally meant that fathers largely missed out on being involved in their children’s lives. While many courts now hold a more flexible view, there’s still more work to be done. Here are some tips for fathers who would like to maximize their chances of getting a favorable custody result.”

One of the most important things to keep in mind, according to Brian, is that fathers should seek to maintain the status quo during the separation process when it comes to child-rearing.

When asked to explain further, he said, “Dissolving a marriage will invariably lead to changes for the entire family. However, it’s crucial that fathers don’t neglect their child-rearing responsibilities during this sensitive time. This is important not only to the emotional well-being of your children but will also help you to create a favorable impression with the court concerning your willingness and ability to be a responsible parent.”

Following this, according to Douglas, it’s better if fathers continue the same living arrangements with their kids during separation, if possible.

“One of the best ways to continue being an integral part of your children’s lives is by living with them. If you can, then it’s best to stay in the shared residence with your kids after the split until you and your ex have reached and finalized an official custody agreement,” he said.

Douglas further added that no matter which parent leaves the home, the child or children should be reassured that they are loved and that nothing can break their strong relationship.

“You should also ensure that your kids fully understand the arrangements laid out in the child custody schedule, since it’ll obviously impact their daily lives. To get accustomed to this change, let them help in setting up their new rooms in the new home,” he commented.

Brian Douglas went on to say, “Making sure the kids know with whom they will be with and when does not mean that you should discuss the reasons for the divorce or what is going on in court with them. That must be avoided”.

It can often be helpful, Brian added, to keep a detailed record or calendar of the child-care responsibilities and who takes care of them.

When asked to elaborate, he said, “Recording this information before and after a separation can go a long way in helping your lawyer explain to the judge how child-rearing is, or should be, divided between you and your ex. Such responsibilities include getting the kids prepared in the morning before school, bathing, completing homework with them, extra-curricular activities, going to the park with them, attending parent-teacher conferences, and doctor and dentist appointments.”
