Type One Style Releases New Guide On Diabulimia, An Eating Disorder Affecting Diabetics
Kent, United Kingdom – June 7, 2022 —
In the latest post on their blog, Type One Style has published a wide range of information about the eating disorder, diabulimia. This post comes in response to the most recent statistics from the NHS, reporting that an estimated 4 in 10 people with type one diabetes are struggling with diabulimia. The disorder covers a spectrum of behaviours, including but not limited to binging on food, restricting insulin, and purging.
Hundreds of people surveyed for new article
In order to better understand and report on the condition, the team at Type One Style interviewed a range of people who have been struggling with diabulimia. They also carried out a survey of hundreds of people to better understand the disorder and the conditions that can lead to someone struggling with diabulimia. Given the potentially fatal nature of the eating disorder, the team aims to best represent the reality of the condition and the risk that it poses to people with diabetes.
From their own surveys, Type One Style found that 94.8% of respondents say there is not enough awareness of diabulimia. It is also more widespread than many may believe, with 56% of people surveyed admitting to giving themselves less insulin than they know they need, a potentially harmful behaviour associated with diabulimia.
Raising awareness of diabulimia
The guide, now published on the Type One Style website, covers a range of topics, including what diabulimia is, how it develops, how social media affects it, real-life accounts of living with diabulimia, warning signs and consequences, as well as guides for those who are concerned they might be developing diabulimia. Aside from raising awareness, the blog post also offers suggestions on how to treat diabulimia as well as how to help others who are struggling with it, in an attempt to help people better navigate the eating disorder.
Using social media to prevent deaths
Type One Style is requesting that all readers share and quote their article across social media, to friends, and across the internet in order to raise awareness of the damage caused by diabulimia, such as how social media can contribute to it in people who live with type on diabetes. With this, they hope to help stop thousands of preventable deaths and hospitalizations due to diabetic ketoacidosis every single year.
