Weight Loss Surgery Quiz and Emotions
March 09, 2016 – – Bariatric Mexico Surgery is pleased to introduce their new weight-loss surgery quiz. The quiz aims to help visitors determine whether they might qualify for bariatric surgery. With about a dozen questions, the quiz helps us to discover whether a visitor to the website might be a good candidate. Upon receiving answers to the quiz, Dr. Paola Velazco of BMS or assistant Karen will respond directly via email.
Bariatric surgery is not a quick fix. There are many underlying causes that drive people to become overweight or obese. Certain medical conditions such as diabetes, hypothyroidism or pregnancy may contribute to excess pounds as well as some prescription medicines. Also, an inactive lifestyle, genes and family history may also contribute to weight gain or obesity.
It is also important to consider the emotional push-and-pull of losing weight and the after-surgery challenges involved (particularly for women). According to Marcelle Pick, OB-GYN N.P, reporting in HuffPost Healthy Living, “Up to an amazing 90 percent of people who lose weight may eventually go on to gain it all back, according to the results of a recent study.” Further she says, “the statistics are so shocking because the critically important emotional after-effects of weight loss aren’t usually taken into account.”
There are a number of issues that those who lose weight face. Excess weight can be embarrassing but it can also act as a kind of protective barrier, without which the individual can feel more vulnerable. There can also be a fear that after all the work and cost of losing weight, it may quickly return
Another challenge can occur when family or friends, those the weight loser relies on for support, don’t react in the expected manner. One reason is that if the relationship is co-dependent, the support person may suddenly find that they are needed less. This can even lead to the point where they actually try to undermine the success of the person losing weight.
For people who are extremely overweight, bariatric surgery, combined with positive lifestyle changes, healthy new eating habits and regular exercise, can be the best road to weight loss. As the above points out though, emotions must be taken into consideration and attention paid to them.
