Xarelto Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Drug Caused Lasting Medical Problems
May 26, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on Xarelto, a blood thinner drug approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) designed to treat patients with a variety of medical conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), and pulmonary embolism. It is also used in patients that have undergone surgical procedures such as hip and knee replacement in order to prevent blood clots.
Since its initial approval, however, the FDA has issued two black box warnings for Xarelto. Such warnings could result in the drug’s complete removal from the market as these warnings are the most strict type of warning that can be given to a product.
The FDA’s concerns are verified by the filing of more than 3,400 lawsuits in federal courts all across the United States by plaintiffs alleging that the use of the anticoagulant placed patients using it at a much higher risk of instances of severe and uncontrollable bleeding, many of which have also proven to be fatal. Additionally, plaintiffs are claiming that the manufacturers, Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals, a division of the Johnson and Johnson Corporation, did not adequately inform patients and medical professionals of the risks associated with the drug.
One particular lawsuit was filed by a married couple in Ohio, who claim that the wife was prescribed Xarelto to treat her atrial fibrillation, a heart condition which increases the risk of stroke. The plaintiffs claim that only after 2 months of starting to take Xarelto she experienced a life-threatening gastrointestinal bleeding occurrence, anemia, and other unspecified injuries, as per the couple’s court paperwork. The couple is seeking over $150,000 in compensatory damages to cover medical bills that have been and will be incurred and to compensate them for the effects of the bleeding that will be long-term in their duration.
