Xarelto Plaintiff Alleges Drug Caused Fatal Brain Hemorrhage
December 01, 2015 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com releases details on yet another Xarelto lawsuit alleging that the drug caused uncontrollable bleeding which led to a fatal brain hemorrhage for one victim. The suit was filed by the daughter of the deceased in Vermont under case number 2:14-cv-00158-cr. The daughter states that her father had been taking Xarelto less than one month before his fatal brain bleed occurred, in order to treat atrial fibrillation.
It is common for patients with atrial fibrillation to use some sort of blood thinner. Atrial fibrillation causes the heart to beat irregularly and typically more quickly than usual. At times, this can make it difficult for blood to be effectively circulated throughout the body, and can sometimes cause blood strokes or clots. Blood thinning drugs as treatment for atrial fibrillation are intended to stop these clots or strokes from occurring.
Xarelto has become widely considered the most dangerous blood thinner on the market today. This is due to the fact that the drug has no corresponding antidote. When a patient using Xarelto begins to bleed, physicians are unable to counter the medicine’s effects and get their blood to clot. In these instances, it becomes necessary to resort to life-saving treatments such as blood transfusions. At times, like in the case of this particular victim, these treatments are not effective in saving a patient’s life.
Traditional blood thinners have an antidote in vitamin K. When a patient taking a traditional blood thinner becomes injured and bleeds, physicians are able to administer vitamin K which reverses the effects of the medication and allows their blood to clot. Many plaintiffs who have filed uncontrollable bleeding lawsuits against Xarelto now state that, had they been aware of the anticoagulant’s lack of antidote and the dangers that this posed, they would have chosen an alternative treatment.
The Xarelto lawsuits, which now federally number over 1,700, have been filed against Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a division of Johnson & Johnson), and Bayer AG. They commonly allege that these manufacturers did not properly warn consumers about the dangers of the drug, and were negligent to release a drug onto the market without a corresponding antidote. The suits have been consolidated for form multidistrict litigation number 2592. This consolidation will help the litigation to move more smoothly and efficiently, avoiding duplicate discovery or different rulings from different judges. It will also help to conserve resources for those involved.
Attorney Joseph Osborne is working to ensure that as the cases in the current MDL await trial, all who have been affected by Xarelto are able to evaluate their legal rights. Those who have been victims of adverse health effects or uncontrollable bleeding episodes may be entitled to significant compensation. Attorney Osborne is offering free legal consultations to these individuals.
