Surgeons Devise New Method for Determining Potential Risks for Patients

A newly published study reveals a point system that helps to determine the likelihood that a patient would need to remain on a ventilator following surgery. Each patient is rated on a scale of 1-7, with each potential factor receiving its own point value.

The study reveals that if the patient is a smoker, older than sixty, or undergoing a procedure on their esophagus, they are more at risk. Additionally, if the patient has been diagnosed with severe pulmonary disease, or exhibits signs of infection or inflammation, their risk goes up.

Researchers found that the group with a mean average of 2 points was far less likely to need post-operative ventilation than the group with a mean average of 3 points. In fact, researchers noted that those patients with a score of 3 or more comprised the 20% who experienced at least 70% of the possible adverse effects.

In reference to these findings, study coauthor Adam P. Johnson, MD, MPH, said “he need for artificial mechanical ventilation after operations is infrequent, but when it happens it does carry high costs. Ventilator dependence is highly associated with mortality, and in and of itself is a morbidity. Our goal was to quantify how each factor affects the risk of ventilator dependence. Once we identify this smaller set of high risk patients, the goal then is to optimize them before and during their hospital stay.”

This new method is something that can be implemented nation-wide, and can help to further determine an individual’s risk, and whether or not they are ready to go under the knife at that time. What’s more, these new findings are a step in the right direction for preventing potentially deadly cardiac episodes.
