The Dallas based law firm of Eberstein Witherite LLP will serve as a sponsor for this year’s annual Tulisoma Literary Arts Festival. The event is a community-based initiative designed to promote literacy and the arts in the South Dallas area. Eberstein Witherite founders Brian Eberstein and Amy Witherite are set to be in attendance at the festival, providing bookmarks and other items to guests.
About the Tulisoma Festival: Promoting Literacy in South Dallas
The Tulisoma South Dallas Book Fair and festival was founded in 2003 by the late Leo V. Chaney, Jr., and Dr. Harry Robinson, who serves as President and CEO of the African American Museum. The event was created for the development of an event that would engage families, avid readers, aspiring writers, and those who visit the city of Dallas. Multiple community leaders have served as sponsors of the event throughout its inception, with the Dallas Public Library acting as lead partner. Tulisoma is Swahili for “we read.”
This year’s event is set to take place August 28th– August 29th. The experience will feature a concert, guest authors, and vendor booths. Among notable authors to be in attendance are civil rights activist Joanne Bland, who marched on “Bloody Sunday” and “Turn Around Tuesday.” Bland has spoken about her experiences and extensive work at workshops and conferences throughout the United States.
Acclaimed journalist, author, and lecturer A. Peter Bailey will also be a guest author. Baily was a founding member of The Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), and has contributed to several books, documentaries, and articles about Malcolm X, who was organizer of the group. The author and activist, who is a former editor of Ebony Magazine, has lectured on various topics at more than 35 colleges and universities throughout the United States. Bailey has contributed to several popular publications including Essence, the New York Times, the New York Daily News, and Black Enterprise.
Also, featured at the concert will be R&B singer Stephanie Mills and legendary performers The Whispers.
Last year’s attendance total for the weekend was 2,600 guests. This year, organizers have projected an increase to a total of 4,400 attendees. The event will be held at the African American Museum, 3536 Grand Avenue, Dallas, TX 75210. The Heart & Soul Concert Tour at the Majestic Theater will kick off the event on Friday, August 28.
