September 21, 2015 – – Banville Law reports that Low Testosterone drugs have created quite a stir in recent news, as thousands of men are filing lawsuits against the manufacturers, alleging that the products caused heart attacks, strokes, and blood clots.

These products, originally designed to treat the 3-7% of men in the U.S. who suffer from hypogonadism, are now being used to treat “low testosterone,” a condition that some of these men now allege was fabricated so that more men would take drugs which have not been proven to improve their symptoms.

As men age, their testosterone levels naturally drop each year, and this can cause some unpleasant side effects. Most commonly, men experience a decrease in their libido or inability to get erections, general fatigue, decrease in muscle mass and bone density, and an increase in irritability and mood swings. In order to treat these symptoms, some men choose to use low testosterone drugs.

These testosterone products, more recently prescribed regularly to treat “low T” in men, have been appealing to even younger men looking to enhance their physical physique, energy levels, or even sex drives, and to delay the traditional signs of aging. There is now a growing concern, however, that these products bring with them some serious risks.

Prescription sales for these low T products has steadily increased, beginning at about $18 million in 1988, to $1.6 billion in 2011. Additionally, from 2001 to 2011, the percentage of men over 40 who were using low T drugs tripled.

Many prior low T patients are now filing suit, alleging that the medications have caused them to have blood clots, heart attacks, and strokes, and that the manufacturers failed to properly warn them of these adverse side effects. Laurence Banville, Esq comments: “As a result of these allegations, the warning labels should be evaluated and changed to reflect the real risks of the therapy.”

Recently, the FDA released a general safety warning indicating that testosterone drugs used for the wrong reasons could potentially increase the chances for heart attacks and strokes. Their statement from March 3rd of this year, read:

“The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cautions that prescription testosterone products are approved only for men who have low testosterone levels caused by certain medical conditions. The benefit and safety of these medications have not been established for the treatment of low testosterone levels due to aging, even if a man’s symptoms seem related to low testosterone. We are requiring that the manufacturers of all approved prescription testosterone products change their labeling to clarify the approved uses of these medications. We are also requiring these manufacturers to add information to the labeling about a possible increased risk of heart attacks and strokes in patients taking testosterone. Health care professionals should prescribe testosterone therapy only for men with low testosterone levels caused by certain medical conditions and confirmed by laboratory tests.”

These issues and others regarding the marketing tactics used for each product, will now be reviewed in federal court. As the lawsuits continued to add up, a federal judicial panel created an MDL or multidistrict litigation. This will be overseen by Judge Matthew F. Kennelly of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Among the defendants are AbbVie, Abbott, Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacia & Upjohn, and Pfizer. There will be several drugs evaluated as well, beginning with AndroGel.
