NJ Resident Files Xarelto Lawsuit Claiming Drug Caused Nearly Fatal GI Bleeding Episode

March 30, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on another lawsuit which has been filed against Bayer AG and Janssen Pharmaceuticals in relation to the anticoagulant drug they manufacture, Xarelto. Additionally, another mass tort program of over 600 lawsuits was formed in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the Court of Common Pleas. Plaintiffs in these cases also share strikingly similar complaints.

Further information found in lawsuit documents for this specific lawsuit indicated that after only six months of taking Xarelto, the plaintiff suddenly suffered from what he claims was a potentially life-threatening gastrointestinal bleed. Gastrointestinal bleeds can occur anywhere along the GI tract within the body, and can be fatal. Although the plaintiff is relieved to have survived the ordeal, he indicates that because of it, he will have long-term health problems and, therefore, extensive future medical bills.

Invokana Lawsuit Plaintiff Claims Drug Caused Patient’s Kidney Failure Development

March 30, 2016 – – TheProductLawyers.com reports on allegations made by a plaintiff in an Invokana lawsuit which claims that the new-generation, type-2 diabetes drug Invokana can cause kidney damage and kidney failure for those taking it. The drug has also been connected to these concerning potential side effects through adverse event reports received by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The agency, in fact, reported having received 50 adverse event reports discussing renal impairment and kidney failure among patients using the drug.

Invokana gained FDA approval in March of 2013. The drug was designed to assist patients struggling with type-2 diabetes by helping to maintain their blood sugar (glucose) levels. To do this, the drug prevents the kidneys from reabsorbing excess sugar and instead using them to excrete that excess sugar from the body via urination. Invokana relies heavily on the kidneys to work in this fashion, and, therefore, it is a concern that the drug may place increased stress on these organs.

In December of 2015, the FDA released a public safety warning indicating that they were requiring Invokana manufacturer Janssen Pharmaceuticals (a subdivision of Johnson & Johnson corporation) to alter the product’s warning label to better reflect some new potential side effect concerns involving a condition known as diabetic ketoacidosis and urinary tract infections (UTIs).

The FDA has also noted that they received 19 adverse event reports which detailed patients who had developed these potentially life-threatening health problems that began as urinary tract infections (UTIs) and later, spread into blood and kidney infections. Each of the 19 patients discussed in the adverse event reports were noted to have required hospitalization and dialysis for kidney failure. Because damage sustained to the kidneys is unable to be repaired, patients with seriously damaged kidneys generally require dialysis treatments as they await complete kidney transplants.

Zofran Lawsuit MDL 2657 Overseeing Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV Allows Direct Filing

Xarelto Lawsuit Claims Drug Caused Hemorrhagic Pericardial Effusion

March 30, 2016 – – BloodThinnerHelp.com reports on an Arizona lawsuit that alleges the blood-thinning drug, Xarelto, caused a woman to suffer a life-threatening hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, a medical condition in which blood fills the sac around the heart and gets in the way of normal heart contractions. The woman who filed case number 2:16-cv-01359 claimed that she took Xarelto for less than two weeks and that she was diagnosed in 2014 with hemorrhagic pericardial effusion, pericardial tamponade and pleural effusion. This case is the latest of several thousand suits claiming that her bleeding complications resulted from use of the drug. Since December 2014 Xarelto lawsuits have been consolidated in New Orleans, Louisiana as part of a multidistrict litigation panel before U.S. District Judge Eldon Fallon. Judge Fallon has issued a “bellwether”program for the cases, through which early trial dates for the suits are expected to be scheduled for May and February of 2017. Those suits filed in Pennsylvania state court have been consolidated into a mass tort program for more efficient management.

Xarelto was approved by the FDA in 2011 for preventing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis in patients undergoing knee and hip replacements, as well as for atrial fibrillation, reducing the recurrence of blood clots and stent thrombosis. A phase III study of the use of Xarelto showed that 73% of participants in the study suffered from adverse side effects including internal bleeding or anemia. Commonly reported injuries include heart attacks, stroke, internal bleeding gastrointestinal bleeding, brain hemorrhages,rectal bleeding, pulmonary embolisms (blood clots in the lung), epidural hematoma.
