The study was conducted by French researchers on IVC filter devices in order to determine their overall effectiveness. Concerning study results, however, appear to indicate that IVC filter use provides no additional benefits for patients who could use blood-thinning drugs alone.

During the study, researchers observed close to 400 patients from France who were deemed at increased risk for pulmonary embolism due to the fact that they had lower-limb venous thrombosis. These patients were carefully observed and then randomly assigned to use either a blood-thinning drug alone or to be implanted with an IVC filter device.

Study results showed that 3% of the patients who were implanted with IVC filter devices had experienced fatal pulmonary embolisms. Among the patients who took only blood thinners, however, just 1.5% experienced pulmonary embolisms (3 patients) and one of the 3 patients who suffered from the pulmonary embolism survived.

Additional side effects which were reportedly experienced by patients implanted with IVC filters included: access site hematoma, filter thrombosis, and an inability to remove the filter device. Additionally, it was noted that one patient in the study had gone into cardiac arrest during IVC filter insertion. After compiling the findings of their study, French researchers concluded, “These findings do not support the use of this type of filter in patients who can be treated with anticoagulation.”

The drug’s approved uses were later expanded to include treatment for those with atrial fibrillation. Since the initial approval, the anticoagulant has also been given two “black box” warnings from the FDA. These are the most strict warnings a product can be given before being removed from the market and from public sale.

Today, Xarelto lawsuits are mounting and reportedly number over 3,400. The plaintiffs involved in the filings share similar allegations that the drug places users at increased risk for the development of dangerous and sudden bleeding episodes. More than 2,800 federally-filed Xarelto lawsuit cases have been consolidated and transferred to a single court in Eastern Louisiana by the JPML, forming MDL 2592. Additionally, over 620 Xarelto lawsuits have been formed into a mass tort program in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by the Court of Common Pleas.

The young man who was the plaintiff in this case is now age 21, and had begun to take Risperdal at the age of 8 to treat possible autism. Since this time, he grew to develop size 46DD breasts.

Risperdal is a highly potent drug which gained FDA-approval in the early 1990’s. It was approved to treat schizophrenia in adults but was not approved for use in children until much later in 2006. Johnson & Johnson is currently facing allegations that it marketed or pushed “off-label” prescriptions for children well before the drug was FDA-approved for this use.

These studies have demonstrated that, every weekend, about 54 million Americans mow their lawns, producing tons of air pollutants. Garden equipment engines, which have had unregulated emissions until the late 1990s, emit high levels of carbon monoxide, volatile compounds and nitrogen oxides. Together, they produce 5% of the nation’s air pollution. Levels are particularly high in metropolitan areas.

The EPA estimates that over 17 million gallons of fuel, mostly gasoline, are spilled each year while refueling lawn equipment. That is more than all the oil spilled in the Gulf of Alaska by the Exxon Valdez. The EPA has also estimated that 800 million gallons of gas are used by Americans each year to trim their yards.

Meanwhile, electric mowers do not totally eliminate pollution. However, emissions from the electric industry are more regulated. At the same time, they save on gas spills, gas refinery, and gas transportation. Thereby, they have a much lower carbon footprint.

The Union of Concerned Scientists has calculated that running a single gas powered grass mower for an hour emits the same amount of pollutants as eight new cars that drive at 55 mph for an hour. But, one Springfield, Missouri company is committed to breaking this cycle by only using green mowing alternatives.
