According to WPTV.com the victim and his family were awoken by their fire alarm suddenly. Luckily for the family, the fire had not grown too big, and they were able to utilize the fire extinguisher to put out the flames. “If that smoke alarm didn’t go off, none of us would have woken up, you know, none of us would have been able to get to the door ‘cuz it would have been blocked by the flames and we would have all died” the victim stated, which outlines the potential harm the fire could’ve held for him and his family.

A Kootenai County Fire Marshal said, “The battery overcharged and exploded. It blew the end cap off and blew fragments off and on to the couch and ignited the couch in the house.” Officials also emphasized that with the growing popularity of e-cigarettes as an alternative to traditional cigarettes and other tobacco products, the number of incidents involving these devices is also on the rise.

This is not the first case where an e-cig has exploded, in fact, in most of the other cases, the victims haven’t been as fortunate. In a more recent case, in Brooklyn, a 14-year-old boy was holding an e-cigarette at a retail shop, and the device exploded. The explosion caused the loss of vision in the boy’s left eye, and he also suffered significant burns on his hands and face. The young man and his father have decided to take legal action and are working with Attorney Marc Freund of Lipsig, Shapey, Manus, & Moverman.

Recently, the FDA announced that they will reevaluate e-cigs in the hope that through increased regulation they will be able to help combat these incidents. There have been at least 25 explosions since 2009, and 80 percent of the incidents occurred while the device was charging. However, as highlighted by the recent incident in Brooklyn, these explosions can happen during use which is likely to cause greater physical and emotional trauma.

This will assist them in their efforts fight against homelessness. The goal is to establish a sustainable support system for families to survive the stark weather of the upcoming winter, based on the principle that thriftiness requires making the best use of one’s time. Like squirrels harvesting nuts in the summer, or biblical Joseph who demonstrated the wisdom of thriftiness when he developed a survival plan during the years of plenty, the House of Divine Guidance (HDG) has developed a plan to enable support of families during the harshness of the upcoming winter.

Dr. Donna Robinson, CEO and founder of HDG, has made personal promises towards this plan. She says: “While the homeless state of women and children continues to rise, your contribution is going towards solving the problem. Every dollar given will go towards housing homeless women and children and moving them towards economic stability. Give a gift today that will change a child’s life tomorrow.”

The plan involves a caring community of at least three hundred (300) folks dedicating some of their coffee and sweets monies to the tune of $10/month. Dr. Robinson is creating the trifecta of contribution where the individual givers, the business sponsors, and the local government grants will allow HDG to focus more time and energy on care rather than fundraising. Currently, the winter shelter is a twelve week program, but the need is actually year long.

The donations collected by HDG will go toward the cost of transport to daycare, school, medical care, and employment for single mothers in need. It will also go toward subsidizing rental costs for families with children, and the cost of supplies for homeless shelters during the cold winter months.

People are encouraged to participate in any way possible. This can be done through the HDG’s website, through regular post, over the telephone, through Do More 24, or simply by coming to HDG and witnessing the efforts of the staff and volunteers. Every contribution will be appreciated greatly.
