June 01, 2016 – – LipsigLawyers.com reports on a recent e-cigarette explosion in Oklahoma where a local man sustained significant injuries from a defective device. According to Kfor.com, a local Oklahoma man has suffered significant damage due to his e-cigarette exploding in his face.
The victim stated “I was loading more juice into it and, all of a sudden – I can’t remember if I had it facing me or the bottom facing me, but there was a loud flash and bang, and a piece of scrap metal hit me in the head,” Thankfully, the man’s parents woke up from the explosion and took their 22-year-old son to the emergency room, where he received 8 stitches.
Although these explosions occur in the blink of an eye, FEMA has concluded that most cases arise from the overheating of lithium-ion batteries. These batteries are unstable at times, and when too much internal pressure is contained within the battery, it projects the energy through the seal end of the battery, causing an explosion. About 80 percent of these explosions have occurred while the battery was charging due to a voltage overload. Some victims of these explosions and their families have compared the sound of the explosion to that of a gunshot. The victim’s father claimed, “ I heard what I thought was a gunshot in the living room.”
FEMA states that there have been at least 25 reported e-cigarette explosions. Yet, this number is very likely much lower than the actual number of explosions due to underreporting. One such explosion occurred in California in 2013, where a couple was on their way to the airport and their lithium ion battery exploded in the car while it was charging. The driver sustained second-degree burns on a large portion of her lower body, and hands along with severe emotional trauma. The e-cig, her lawsuit alleged, didn’t have necessary safety measures in place, and the businesses involved did not provide adequate precautions to the dangers of her device. In October of 2015, the victim was awarded a $ 1.9 million dollar settlement for damages.
