But this was no normal training workshop. The CCAWA sought out an organisation that uses mattresses and needed them cleaned. For this specific event they located a women’s refuge in the Perth metropolitan area that was grateful for the offer and able to provide four single mattresses for the Saturday training session. Mattresses are one of the most overlooked and yet important pieces of furniture that people own. The average person spends at least a third of their life on their mattress, spilling things on it, and even more intimate and sometimes messy events tend to occur. But few ever think to do anything other than change the sheets. Also consider how much skin a person loses each day. This ends up the on mattress as potential dust mite food.

It only makes sense to periodically clean mattresses for health reasons however more often than not cleaners are requested to clean a mattress for aesthetic reasons, like a spill or ‘accidents’. Common stains often found on mattresses include sweat, urine, blood, vomit, other bodily fluids and staining from where someone has tried to clean the mattress themselves. Most mattresses these days are covered with fairly practical material that lends itself to cleaning however some older mattresses can be problematic and provide the biggest challenge for cleaners.

The end result, in this instance, were four sanitised mattresses that will be well used and appreciated when returned to the Perth women’s refuge and a group of WA cleaners who are better informed and more prepared for cleaning mattresses in the future.
