New Competitors and Acquisitions by Market Leaders: Medtronic, Intuitive Surgical Expand European Robotics and Surgical Navigation Systems Industry

ENT image guided surgery (IGS) systems have the lowest ASP since they are not cross-platform, although many spine and neurosurgery IGS systems have ENT capabilities. IGS systems with spine surgery capabilities have a very similar ASP to neurosurgery IGS systems as the majority of systems used for neurosurgery can also be used for spine surgery and vice versa. The spine navigation segment is not as mature as the neurosurgery navigation segment and therefore it is expected to gain market in the next several years.

Surgical navigation systems are often marketed by implant companies and bundled with other products. While robotics companies have traditionally been smaller and focused on a narrower range of technologies, partnerships have led to a series of acquisitions of smaller robotics companies by larger, more established medical device companies.

The surgical robotic systems market is currently dominated by Intuitive Surgical, while Medtronic leads the surgical navigation systems market. The market is expected to grow considerably as system sales increase in other markets than MIS, and revenue from procedures, maintenance and service contracts increase as a result of the larger installed base. Additional leading competitors in surgical navigation include Brainlab and Stryker. The surgical robotic systems market saw growth on the part of Medtech, Mazor Robotics and Stryker amongst others.

With the new space, we needed the environment to be an extension of that culture. In the past twelve months, more and more filmmakers have begun to take notice. Recently, director Peter Berg and his team chose Sixteen19 for their post work on the Summit Entertainment blockbuster Deepwater Horizon. For The Promise, directed by Terry George (Hotel Rwanda) and starring Christian Bale, Sixteen19 delivered a complete post package comprising mobile dailies across Spain, Portugal and Malta, Avid suites, VFX, final color grading, and editorial finishing in the Chelsea facility.

“I was looking for the perfect New York location to set up my projects. Sixteen19’s new facility absolutely fit the bill,” said Berg. “I’m cutting two projects at Sixteen19’s new facility and I couldn’t be happier here. Jonathan and Pete have put together a very comfortable, state-of-the-art environment for creatives.”

“Sixteen19 was the top choice,” said George. “This is a place which truly fosters a community of creatives. The technical support team made life seamless for our editors. Their knowledge and cooperation to customize workflow was greatly valued by our team. The edit suites are large and comfortable, and the in-house screening room was the perfect place to review VFX, and work with our colorist. It was a pleasure to work at Sixteen19. They have the most helpful, and cheerful staff and are very conveniently located in the heart of Chelsea.”

Conlin points to Sixteen19’s development of a custom workflow for the upcoming Universal Pictures comedy Girl Trip as an example of the transformative impact the company’s boutique approach can have on a project. “We began working with the DP, Greg Gardiner, three weeks prior to the shoot in order to help him cope with some challenging locations,” Conlin explains. “Led by supervising colorist Andrew Francis, color scientist Bill Feightner, and dailies supervisor Olivier Girard, our team developed a proprietary LUT package that Gardiner utilized throughout the 40-day shoot. The looks were applied to the dailies and downstream files throughout the entire post process, including VFX and all Previews.”

While Sixteen19 operates on the cutting edge of post technology, this collaborative approach to service makes it something of a throwback. “We’re not a factory like other facilities,” Hoffman says. “When filmmakers come here, they know we participate as an extension of their production both technically and creatively. That’s how business used to be done in New York. The fact that we still do that today really sets us apart.”

As momentous of a year as it’s been, 2016 isn’t a victory lap for the company – it’s the first step in a larger process. Conlin and Hoffman plan to add more editing and finishing suites, as well as ADR recording and sound finishing. The new resources will allow Sixteen19 to keep pace with its heavy slate of motion picture and television projects, and growing demand for advertising and commercial finishing. “Looking ahead, we’re going to build on our increased capacity and growing reputation for excellence,” Conlin says. “If you look at the kind of work we’ve been doing on major projects in the past year alone, we see all kinds of potential going forward. It’s an exciting time for us.”

Canadians Are Getting the Message on Winter Tires Says Shop Insurance Canada


November 30, 2016 – During the winter months, road accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians rise throughout Canada. There are numerous safe driving practices that can be observed to lower the chance of a collision, but installing winter tires is among the most effective. Auto insurance expert, Shop Insurance Canada, says customers are getting the message regarding winter tires. The company also explains why installing special rubber for the cold season is important.

Most authorities agree that installing winter tires is an essential step to staying safe when driving during the cold months. However, not all provinces make winter tires a mandated feature. Quebec does, but others like Ontario do not, and instead offer auto insurance discounts to customers who install them. Despite not being a mandated feature in some provinces, Canadians appear to understand the importance of winter tires.

A recent survey by Leger for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC) found that seven in 10 Canadian drivers will use winter tires this year.

Quebec is the only province that makes winter tire installation the law. TRAC shows that 68% of Canadian drivers use winter tires, suggesting motorists understand the benefits even outside Quebec.

Nearly seven in 10 Canadian drivers are adopting the use of winter tires, according to a new survey by Leger for the Tire and Rubber Association of Canada (TRAC). The survey was conducted amongst 1518 Canadian drivers between Oct. 17 and 20. The online test had a probability sample of the same size would yield a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

Here is winter tires use outside of Quebec:

Nearly half (49%) of British Columbia drivers now own winter tires, compared to 38% in 2014;
Alberta’s usage rate is now 55% versus 45% in 2014;
In Manitoba and Saskatchewan, usage has climbed 11 percentage points to 50%;
65% of Ontario drivers now use winter tires compared 56% two years ago; and
In Atlantic Canada, where winter tire usage is traditionally second only to Quebec, usage has risen eight percentage points to 81%.

32% of drivers are holding out on using winter tires. That sample believes that all-season tires should be good enough, with 48% of the remainder stating this as a reason for not installing winter tires. 23% cite cost as a reason to not install the tires.

“Drivers adopting winter tires in record numbers is fabulous news because it means Canada’s roadways in winter are becoming significantly safer,” said Glenn Maidment, president of TRAC, in the release. “However, the fact that three-in-ten motorists still do not own winter tires poses a threat to all motorists. This is why outreach to educate drivers continues to be needed. Every motorist needs to know that today’s high-tech winter tires radically outperform all-seasons in all cold-weather driving conditions and offer potentially life-saving benefits.”

Shop Insurance Canada, home to a leading auto insurance quote engine and industry advice, says it is important for the government to campaign to get all drivers to use winter tires, even if that means making them mandatory throughout the country.

“Receiving an auto insurance premium discount for installing winter tires is a significant incentive, but in reality the cost of buying and installing these specialist tires outweighs the discount. Companies will typically offer around a 5% discount for winter tire use, but purchasing them can cost hundreds of dollars.

However, a good set of winter tires will last multiple seasons, so are really an investment on safety. There is no doubt that using specialist tires during the winter improves vehicle handling, braking distances, and traction.

It is encouraging to see that the majority of Canadians are adopting winter tires without being mandated to do so. The government needs to find ways to entice the holdouts, which can hopefully be achieved without ever needing to make winter tires a legal necessity nationwide.”
