DFPG Investments Adds Two New Advisors

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – May 26, 2017 – DFPG Investments, Inc. (DFPG: www.dfpg.com), a dually-registered independent broker-dealer and investment advisor, is pleased to announce that Coughlan and Coughlan Financial Solutions (CCFS), located in Kingfisher, Oklahoma, has joined DFPG.

CCFS is operated by Jake Coughlan and his father, Jim Coughlan. Prior to joining DFPG, CCFS was a branch office of Wilbanks Securities, which is located in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In addition to providing financial advisory services, Jim Coughlan works as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA).

“Jake and Jim have a stellar record and reputation,” says DFPG’s President, Ryan Smith. “We are very pleased that they have joined our firm. As we always say, we work very hard to identify partners that will fit within our culture and follow our core values. Jake and Jim are another great example of the kind of advisors DFPG was built to serve.”

Jake Coughlan noted that DFPG’s clearing and unique custody relationship with RBC, along with DFPG’s expertise in alternative investments, were crucial factors in making his decision. In addition, Jake stated that “DFPG’s commitment to due diligence and compliance are very important to us as we continue to work with our clients.”

DFPG’s CEO, Mike Bendix, says that DFPG has several additional representatives that will join the firm over the next few months. Bendix says, “In the context of today’s regulatory environment, reps are starting to appreciate how pivotal a broker-dealer relationship is to their business and their clients. Frankly, if a rep wants to offer clients access to alternative investments, then the selection of a broker-dealer is probably their most important consideration.”

Bendix says that the popularity of the endowment model, along with investors seeking portfolios that aren’t entirely correlated with the market, has created demand for alternative investments.

“DFPG was originally created with the vision to be an industry leader in the alternative investment segment,” adds Bendix. “Over the years, we have expanded our brand. We have great technology, an attractive RIA platform, and several business development products that create value for our reps. But we haven’t lost sight of our mission and core values.”

Otherworld Cottage Industries Announces Current Travis Edward Pike Recordings and Airplay, Here and Abroad

Wednesday, May 26, 2017 – Gary Schneider’s two-hour “Open Mynd Excursion” on Luxuria Music Internet Radio featured rebroadcasts of pop music from 1967, and a fascinating interview, live in the studio, with Harvey Kubernik, all about Kubernik’s new book, “1967: A Complete Rock Music History of the Summer of Love.” If you missed it, a podcast of the show is online, in two 1-hour segments on LuxuriaMusic.com.

Next week, Gary Schneider’s “Open Mynd Excursion” will be a two-hour special introducing sixties rocker Travis Edward Pike to Luxuria Music fans. Pike, a native Bostonian, formed Travis Pike and the Boston Massacre in 1967, and was featured, along with The Rocking Ramrods, in that year’s WRKO highly publicized Harbor Cruise. But the group changed its name from Travis Pike and the Boston Massacre to Travis Pike’s Tea Party when the Cheetah Lounge in New York City refused to book them for fear of riots! Primarily a live-concert group, popular with college crowds, they were a featured act on campuses, in coffeehouses, in Boston’s Psychedelic Supermarket, on a short-lived WBZ-TV show, and fifty year’s later, on a full page in Kubernik’s “1967: A Complete Rock Music History of the Summer of Love.”

The one and only Travis Pike’s Tea Party single, the Alma Records 1967 release of “If I Didn’t Love You Girl” (flip side “The Likes of You”), never caught on Stateside, but in the nineties was featured in two separate overseas compilation albums. The first, “Sixties Rebellion, Volume 7 – The Backyard Patio” in 1994, put out by Way Back Records in Germany, was followed by the 1995 London Fog UK compilation, “Tougher Than Stains.” Well, this year, it’s back, appearing on “le beat bespoké 7,” the latest album compiled by UK DeeJay Rob Bailey and released through Detour Records. Bailey will also be releasing a 45 rpm vinyl of the two-sided original Travis Pike’s Tea Party single later this summer.

And the beat goes on! In 2016, Pike’s restoration of a few music sequences from “Feelin’ Good,” the 1966 rock music movie for which he composed ten songs, was posted on YouTube. His “Watch Out Woman” and “The Way That I Need You,” performances with the Brattle Street East, filmed in Boston on the banks of the Charles River, stunned sixties garage band music fans, and both songs were quickly picked up by State Records. The never-before-released recordings taken from the original motion picture optical track, will be released July 10th, and “Watch Out Woman” is already getting preview airplay in the UK.

And just in time for Memorial Day, Pike’s “Don’t You Care At All,” composed shortly after the Viet Cong’s failed Tet Offensive in 1968, first performed in California at Guru-V on Arrow Highway in Glendora, and finally recorded and released in his 2014 album, “Reconstructed Coffeehouse Blues” has now been released as a single and posted on YouTube, with an original simulated news broadcast introduction.

Shop Insurance Canada Talks With Co-Author of CCDD National Action Plan for Distracted Driving

May 26, 2017 – Auto insurance expert and quote provider, ShopInsuranceCanada.ca, has recently spoken to the Traffic Injury Research Foundation (TIRF), one of the members of the Canadian Coalition on Distracted Driving (CCDD). The CCDD developed National Action Plan, which comprises 15 components that seek to enhance knowledge and education around distracted driving, while also promoting ways to decrease the number of motorists operating a vehicle while distracted.

Distracted driving is one of the most troubling issues in Canadian motoring. Rising trends in drivers operating a vehicle while distracted have sent alarm bells ringing through government, insurance companies, industry groups, and experts.

25 per cent of all deaths on Canadian roads in 2013 were caused by distracted driving. This shows the problem is real and that it is becoming an issue for every Canadian. The CCDD created the National Action Plan to help stem growing rates of collisions caused by distractions, by developing the most concise review on how governments and organizations can manage the problem.

The plan focuses on four priority areas: education and prevention, enforcement, data and research, and technology and industry.

To develop the plan, the CCDD considered the numerous causes of distracted driving and how drivers can be engaged to avoid driving while distracted. Among the topics researched were: driver behaviour, penalties, enforcement, education campaigns, devices and in-vehicle technologies, emergency medical care, auto insurance, the transportation industry and automated vehicles.

Distracted driving now causes more deaths on Canadian roads than impaired driving. How will the action plan engage drivers and educate them on the risks, and is creating a social stigma around distracted driving a possibility?

Distracted driving deaths have surpassed impaired driving deaths in some Canadian jurisdictions according to the latest fatality data. Nationally, distraction was a factor in an estimated 25 per cent of drivers killed in fatal crashes in 2013. This troubling trend has made distracted driving a top road safety priority for governments and organizations across the country. While a wide range of initiatives have been pursued by concerned stakeholders to tackle this pressing problem, there is an urgent need for a coordinated and comprehensive blueprint to effectively address it. To help fill this gap, the Canadian Coalition on Distracted Driving (CCDD) was formed to develop a National Action Plan, which was published on March 2, 2017. The Plan contains 15 action items organized according to four priority areas: education and prevention, enforcement, data and research, and technology and industry. It was designed to inspire and engage agencies concerned about distracted driving and provide them with tools to help reverse this trend.

The lack of consistent and universal data regarding distracted driving is an issue. The Action Plan wants “to explore the development of a standard, uniform definition of distracted driving”. Is there a timeframe for when we could expect to see such a standard published?

The 2nd annual meeting of the CCDD took place last week; exploration of the potential of creating a standard, uniform definition of distracted driving for data collection purposes was one of the topics on the agenda. One of the challenges associated with creating the definition is that road safety is a provincial responsibility, and there are variations in provincial legislation which have important implications for definitions. At the meeting, we explored what common ground with regard to definitions already exists, and what opportunities are available to further increase consistency so that data can be more easily compared.

What can insurance companies do to raise awareness about distracted driving and combat it, and are insurance companies hard enough on their customers who have been caught operating a vehicle while distracted?

Insurance companies have an important role to play in educating drivers about the risks, as well as improving strategies to help manage distracted drivers. The Co-operators, a partner in the CCDD, along with Manitoba Public Insurance and Saskatchewan Government Insurance and others, is taking the lead on creating an insurance industry initiative to examine current practices and consider ways that companies can work cooperatively to manage distracted drivers.

The Action Plan can stimulate the private and public sector, but can the war on distracted driving only be won by making punishments more of a deterrent?

Distracted driving a is a complex issue that requires a combination of legislation, enforcement, education and awareness to change driver behaviours. The use of punishment is one of many tools that can deter some drivers; however, not all drivers are motivated by punishment to change their behaviour. To illustrate, while police agencies have utilized both overt and covert enforcement tactics to detect drivers, both tactics have similarly resulted in large numbers of citations that resulted in penalties. Anecdotal reports from police have suggested that drivers perceive distracted driving citations as the “cost of doing business,” and while some drivers have switched to hands-free devices, and others may use their phone less often, it is estimated that more drivers have aimed to merely avoid detection by holding their phone out of sight. So, in conjunction with punishment, a range of other strategies to motivate behaviour change are needed. TIRF released a road safety campaign tool kit which includes a fact sheet on how research can help drive effective road safety campaigns geared towards changing driver. You can find this fact sheet on our website:
http://tirf.ca/wpcontent/uploads/2017/01/TIRF_Toolkit_Factsheets_RoadSafetyCampaignEffectiveness.pdf.

What does CCDD make of Transport Minister Marc Garneau’s call for the federal government to create a national standard for laws on distracted driving? How essential is such a plan?

Increasing penalties, fines and demerits alone will not solve this problem. It’s part of the solution, but it’s not the entire solution. Changing behaviour is one of the hardest things to do, so, a massive coordinated education campaign is going to be critical to achieve the necessary level of awareness about the risks and real consequences of distracted driving. In other words, it will be equally important to change social norms such that distracted driving is unacceptable.

Autonomous vehicles are widely predicted to be able to transform road safety. However, true driverless vehicles are at least a decade away. In the meantime, are in-car systems an equal distraction to a cell phone? Basically, these systems place the screen and functionality of a smartphone on a central console.

I think we’re not keeping pace. The technology is advancing much more quickly than we can study it and evaluate it and test it for its effects in terms of distraction. The crash risk associated with hands-free texting while driving is not as well understood because in-car voice to-text technology is relatively new, and few studies investigating this specific issue have been completed to date. What is known, however, supports the contention that hands-free texting while driving poses significant distraction, and consequently, unacceptable crash risk. One of the more recent studies on this issue published in June 2016 by the University of Sussex in the Transportation Research journal revealed that using hands-free technology while driving is just as distracting as using a handheld device.

Information on the University of Sussex study is available here:
http://www.sussex.ac.uk/broadcast/read/35831

During the gradual move to fully automated cars, is the technology the ultimate distraction. Is there a chance semi-autonomous vehicles will make drivers too relaxed?

The Traffic Injury Research Foundation conducted a public opinion survey about autonomous vehicles in May 2016 with the results released in September 2016. The results of this poll demonstrated that the limitations of automated vehicle technology are not well-understood by the public. Almost 1 in 6 Canadians believed that they would not have to be attentive when driving a semi-automated vehicle, and that they would not have to be prepared to take control of it unexpectedly. Equally concerning, at least some drivers reported they would be more willing to take risks when using a semi-automated vehicle. Almost 25% of drivers reported they would drive tired or fatigued, and 17% would engage in a non-driving activity such as texting, reading or working more than they do now. And, 10% and 9% of drivers respectively indicated that they would be more willing to sleep or nap behind the wheel, or drink and drive. These findings underscored that drivers are not aware of their continued role in the safety equation as these vehicles become available. Such misperceptions have real potential to negatively affect driver behaviour and result in either unintentional misuse or abuse of technologies that are able to assist drivers, but not replace them.

The full report is available here: http://tirf.ca/TIRFCAD16J

The executive summary is available here: http://tirf.ca/TIRFCAD16K

How drivers say they will use self-driving vehicles infographic is available here: http://tirf.ca/TIRFCAD16K1

Finally, you mention in the plan that there are “many other gaps that require attention”. What are some of these gaps?

The other gaps are more specific to individual sectors and industries and will require more tailored approaches. For example, there is a need to tailor company safety policies that are industry-specific, there are a wide range of data collection issues in transportation and health sectors which must be addressed, there is a need for targeted education campaigns that are specific to young children and reflective of their developmental capabilities, in addition to a number of research questions that require attention.

Neptune City, NJ Author Publishes Home State History Book

New Jersey and the Great War, a new book by Richard J. Connors, Ph.D., has been released by Dorrance Publishing Co., Inc.

With this insightful analysis, Richard J. Connors Ph.D. commemorates the contribution of the State of New Jersey and its citizens on the centennial anniversary of World War I. Because of its coastal location and much-needed industry, New Jersey played a significant role both prior to and during America’s declared involvement.

Historical detail brings to life pre-war America and the daily lives of those who would sacrifice so much. From immigration to industry and infrastructure, we see the factors that contributed to the war effort. Well before America’s formal entry to the war, supplies and volunteers to European forces shaped public perception and involvement and laid the groundwork. Once war was declared, the bulk of New Jersey’s National Guard units, draftees, and volunteers served in two US Army Divisions, the 29th and the 78th; their roles in particular are meticulously researched. New Jersey and the Great War offers a fresh look at the background and aftermath of a state uniquely poised in its preparation for world-wide war.

About the Author:
Richard J. Connors, Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus at Seton Hall University. He received his undergraduate degree at Seton Hall and his graduate degrees from Columbia University. His major publications are A Cycle of Power: The Local Political Career of Mayor Frank Hague; The Process of Constitutional Revision in New Jersey, 1940-1947; The Government of New Jersey (with William Dunham); and The New Jersey Constitution of 1776. Manhattan, NY Based Train Accident Lawyer Discusses Upcoming NTSB Valhalla Train Crash Report

New York City, NY, 05/25/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

As reported by CBS New York, the National Transportation Safety Bureau (NTSB) is set to release the results of its investigation of a deadly train accident that took place two years ago in Valhalla, New York.

The crash, which occurred on February 3, 2015 in the evening hours, involved a commuter train on Metro-North Railroad’s Harlem Line. The train struck a vehicle, killing the car’s driver and six people in the train. Fifteen other people were seriously injured in the crash.

The CBS report states that her SUV “became caught in heavy traffic on the railroad crossing…” According to the husband of the female motorist killed in the crash, the crossing was dangerous.

Final NTSB Report Expected

The news report states that, although the NTSB report has not yet been released, preliminary documents in the investigation hint at certain factors being responsible for the accident. The driver’s husband says he believes the report will contain a discussion of a failure of a “preemptive traffic light system.”

According to the story, the light is controlled by the State Department of Transportation on the Taconic Parkway and should have turned green to ensure the area surrounding the railroad crossing was free of traffic. The report also states that the NTSB has said the light did not turn green at the time of the accident, causing traffic to back up from the intersection to the crossing.

The news report goes on to state that the crossing remains essentially unchanged from the night of the crash, save for the addition of a sign.

NYC Train Accident Lawyer Discusses Railroad Crashes

New York City auto accident lawyer Jonathan C. Reiter explains, “Although rail travel is statistically much safer than traveling by car, railroad accidents are not a rare event. An Amtrak crash in 2015 carrying over 200 passengers from Washington, D.C. to New York killed seven passengers. In December 2013, another Metro-North train derailed in the Bronx, injuring 63 people and killing four. These are just two of the most recent deadly train disasters in the United States.”

Railroad disasters are in fact common enough that a recent CBS News report lists 11 major catastrophic train accidents in recent history, with the accidents occurring between 1993 and 2015. In several of the crashes, hundreds of passengers were injured.

If you have been involved in a train accident or train derailment, it’s important to speak to an experienced New York City train accident and mass transit accident lawyer as soon as possible. Act quickly to protect your rights.

Bad Drivers Live Locally Says Philadelphia Car Accident Lawyer Rand Spear

Philadelphia, PA, USA, 05/25/2017 /SubmitPressRelease123/

Drivers from Pennsylvania and New Jersey rank as some of the nation’s worst drivers, according to a study released earlier this year by insurance company EverQuote. The company uses a smart phone app, EverDrive, to warn drivers of dangerous driving behavior. That information was compiled for drivers across the county. This high tech tool just confirms what those of us living here already know says Philadelphia car accident lawyer Rand Spear; you need to be extra careful when you’re out on the roads.

The company found that those from the following states were the worst drivers overall: New Hampshire, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Rhode Island.

Pennsylvania drivers came in as the fifth worst when it came to breaking speed limits.

Only California drivers had heavier lead feet than those from New Jersey and Pennsylvania when it came to acceleration.

Not surprisingly New Jersey drivers had the second sharpest braking in the country; those from Pennsylvania came in as the fourth worst.

The two states also broke into the bottom five when it came to poor turning skills.

Rankings are based on drivers’ phone use, speeding, acceleration, braking and turning.

Northeastern states (including Pennsylvania and New Jersey) as a region have the country’s worst drivers with those from the South ranked next in poor driving. Nearly half of Northeastern drivers’ trips involved speeding.

The safest drivers, overall, are from the Midwest. The country’s safest drivers are from Montana, Wyoming, Alaska, North Dakota and South Dakota.

Nationwide:

If our collective driving were a high school Driver’s Ed course, we would get a “C+.” Nationally drivers received an average safe driving score of 79 out of 100 under the National Center for Education Statistics grade point average scale.

Speeding is the most common unsafe driving habit. Ranking with the lowest national average safety rating of 79 out of 100, speeding was the biggest unsafe driving offense, compared to phone use (80), hard braking (83), risky acceleration (85) and hard turns (86).

Men and women largely share driving habits though men are less like to talk on the phone while driving however, men are more likely to speed.

Those younger than 21 are only rated slightly worse drivers than those older than 21 and both groups are just as likely to break speed limits. Younger drivers are 15% more likely to use their phones while driving.

The EverDrive app was first developed at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Science Intelligence Lab. Information from the app was gathered from 15,000 drivers for three months who drove about 18 million miles, analyzing who had the best and worst driving habits.
