They will engineer different versions of the T2 lytic bacteriophage that bind multiple different regions of the BamA protein found on the surface of several pathogenic bacteria, which will ensure they only infect these target bacteria. They will test the different phage for capacity to kill pathogenic E. coli and Shigella, and whether they cause resistance.

Kenny Slaught notes that Grand Challenges Explorations (GCE) funds individuals worldwide to explore ideas that can break the mold in how the humanity approaches persistent global health and development challenges. GCE is a $100 million initiative funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and was launched in 2008. More than 1,186 projects in over 61 countries have received GCE grants. Anyone from any organization can apply for the GCE grant program. There is a short two-page online application and no preliminary data required. Initial grants of $100,000 are awarded two times a year. A successful project has the opportunity to receive a follow-on grant of up to $1 million.

Raj Prem’s career began as a music journalist with a particular interest in the bands of the 1960s and 1970s era of Rock and Roll. His fine art collection started after a chance conversation in 1996 with one of the owners of the San Francisco Art Exchange (SFAE) gallery. Prem then made it his mission to find and exhibit some of the most representative images of that era. His first fine art collection of Rock and Roll photographs was shown at SFAE a year later, in 1997. Prem’s collection spans his chosen era of 1963-1972 and includes iconic snapshots from photographers such as Robert Freeman, Michael Joseph, Iain Macmillan, Michael Cooper, Peter Webb, Jerry Schatzberg, Dominique Tarlê, Terry O’Neill, and Pattie Boyd. In nearly two decades, he has staged almost 100 exhibitions of his photography collection in many countries. More than 40 of those exhibitions have been held at SFAE, but he also curates collections at the Snap Gallery, Atlas Gallery, and Proud Galleries. At Proud Galleries, he collaborated with Kate Boenigk, Managing Director, to co-produce and curate many exhibitions.

The number of provider-sponsored health plans (PSPs) is strongly on the rise in the United States giving way to a direct-to-employer (DTE) solution for health care plans. According to Price Waterhouse Cooper (PwC), 50 percent of U.S. health systems have applied, or will apply, for an insurance license.
