Modesto Recovery Treatment Releases a Study That Shows Impact of Social Interactions on Addictive Behavior

January 30, 2019 – – A new study published in Nature Neuroscience finds that social interactions can have a profound effect on behaviors related to addiction, and on the brain’s response to drug-associated cues. These findings have implications for people with substance use disorders (SUDs), because it suggests that social interaction can change the activity of specific neuronal circuits that control drug craving and relapse. The research was funded by the National Institutes of Health and led by Dr. Marco Venniro from the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA).

The researchers used established animal models of drug addiction to show that when given a choice, rats repeatedly chose social interaction over self-administration of heroin or methamphetamine. This held true even for rats that had previously been using heroin or methamphetamine in a “compulsive” way (like humans with an SUD).

Additionally, all rats robustly chose peer contact over more drug access even when they were continuously housed with their peers. And during prolonged abstinence periods, they were significantly less vulnerable to relapse than rats that simply had their access to drugs removed. However, some rats resumed drug taking when access to a peer was delayed. The study introduces a novel paradigm to study brain mechanisms of social factors in addiction and could lead to new behavioral and pharmacological treatments for SUDs.

The protective effects of social interaction are more straightforward for rats than for people, but even so, the new findings in rats are in accord with what social scientists have reported for decades — feelings of connectedness to society can protect some (not all) people against SUDs. The rats that are less strongly protected by social contact could be a model for understanding and treating their human counterparts.

Bohemia Recovery Detox’s Study Reveals: Teen Substance Use America’s #1 Public Health Problem

January 30, 2019 – – 9 out of 10 Americans who meet the medical criteria for addiction started smoking, drinking, or using other drugs before age 18, according to a national study released today by CASAColumbia (CASA) at Columbia University.

Adolescent Substance Use: America’s #1 Public Health Problem reveals that adolescence is the critical period for the initiation of substance use and its consequences. The CASA report finds 1 in 4 Americans who began using any addictive substance before age 18 are addicted, compared to 1 in 25 Americans who started using at age 21 or older.

Adolescent Substance Use at Epidemic Levels: The CASA report underscores the fact that addiction is a disease with adolescent origins. The underdeveloped teen brain makes it likelier that teens will take risks, including using addictive substances that interfere with brain development, impair judgment and heighten their risk of addiction.

The CASA report reveals that: 75% (10 million) of all high school students have used addictive substances including tobacco, alcohol, marijuana or cocaine; 1 in 5 of them meets the medical criteria for addiction, 46% (6.1 million) of all high school students currently use addictive substances; 1 in 3 of them meets the medical criteria for addiction.

“Teen substance use is our nation’s number one public health problem. Smoking, drinking and using other drugs while the brain is still developing dramatically hikes the risk of addiction and other devastating consequences,” said Jim Ramstad, Former Member of Congress (MN-3) and a CASA board member who also chaired the report’s National Advisory Commission.

The CASA report noted that alcohol is the preferred addictive substance among high school students: 72.5% have drunk alcohol, 46.3% have smoked cigarettes, 36.8% have used marijuana, 14.8% have misused controlled prescription drugs, 65.1% have used more than one substance.

“Addiction is a disease that in most cases begins in adolescence so preventing or delaying teens from using alcohol, tobacco or other drugs for as long as possible is crucial to their health and safety,” said Bohemia Recovery Detox. “We rightfully worry about other teen health problems like obesity, depression or bullying, but we turn a blind eye to a more common and deadly epidemic that we can in fact prevent.”

American Culture Drives Teen Substance Use: The report finds that American culture, broadly defined, actually increases the risk that teens will use addictive substances. A wide range of social influences subtly condone or more overtly encourage use, including acceptance of substance use by parents, schools and communities; pervasive advertising of these products; and media portrayals of substance use as benign or glamorous, fun and relaxing. These cultural messages and the widespread availability of tobacco, alcohol, marijuana and controlled prescription drugs normalize substance use, undermining the health and futures of our teens.

46% of children under age 18 (34.4 million) live in a household where someone 18 or older is smoking, drinking excessively, misusing prescription drugs or using illegal drugs.

Less than half (42.6%) of parents list refraining from smoking cigarettes, drinking alcohol, using marijuana, misusing prescription drugs or using other illicit drugs as one of their top three concerns for their teens; almost 21% say that marijuana is a harmless drug.

The report also finds that many teens with other challenges such as a family history including a genetic predisposition, a co-occurring health problem, or a victim of trauma are at even higher risk of substance use and addiction.

A Costly Epidemic: The CASA report declares teen smoking, drinking, misusing prescription drugs and using illegal drugs to be a public health epidemic presenting clear and present dangers to millions of American teens, and severe and expensive long range consequences for our nation.

In addition to the heightened risk of addiction, consequences of teen substance use include accidents and injuries; unintended pregnancies; medical conditions such as asthma, depression, anxiety, psychosis and impaired brain function; reduced academic performance and educational achievement; criminal involvement and even death.

The report finds teen substance use is the origin of the largest preventable and most costly public health problem in America today. Immediate costs per year of teen use include an estimated $68 billion associated with underage drinking and $14 billion in substance-related juvenile justice costs. Total costs to federal, state and local governments of substance use, which has its roots in adolescence, are at least $468 billion per year – almost $1,500 for every person in America.

“The combination of adolescence, an American culture that glorifies and promotes substance use, and easy access to tobacco, alcohol and other drugs creates a perfect storm for our teens and for taxpayers,” said Bohemia Recovery Detox. “We no longer can justify writing off adolescent substance use as bad behavior, as a rite of passage or as kids just being kids. The science is too clear, the facts are too compelling, the health and social consequences are too devastating and the costs are simply too high.”

Cali Dreamz Shows Why It Is Better To Buy A Home In Rent Vs Buy Analysis

January 30, 2019 – – Cali Dreamz Real Estate, based in The Greater Sacramento area, CA, has announced that they want to show why it is better for people to buy a home rather than rent an apartment. They have noted that because of the previous housing crash, people have become more hesitant when it comes to deciding to buy a home. But what they would like people to know is that if a rent vs buy analysis is performed, the benefits of buying a home would outweigh those of simply renting.

Jordan Yarbrough, realtor at Cali Dreamz Real Estate, says, “It is understandable that people today are more reluctant to buy a home because of the bursting of the US housing bubble in 2006 that even caused a recession. It is true that mistakes were made then that caused the housing crisis but the basic principles of why it is better to buy a home than rent an apartment remain the same. When a rent versus buy analysis is done it is clear that buying a home has bigger potential long-term benefits, including improvements in quality of life and tax advantages.”

Jordan Yarbrough also wants to point out that owning a home is part of the American Dream. And one of the key advantages of buying a home is that people are able to settle down and establish their roots in a particular community. Renting means more flexibility but it is more difficult to feel established in a certain community if a person is just renting. This means that those who own a home can do anything they want with their home, such as put up a garden or make improvements without having to ask permission.

Another benefit of buying a home is that it offers tax advantages. Homeowners are allowed to deduct the interests in their payments on their federal income taxes. This is a substantial deduction because interests make up a large portion of their payments, especially during the early years of owning a home. They can also deduct some property taxes and closing fees.

Furthermore, buying a home is like getting enrolled in a forced savings plan. Homeowners will need to include in their budget the monthly payments with the end goal of finally completely owning the home, which is akin to building wealth.

And it should also be noted that buying a home will cost less over time when compared to renting. While it is true that at the start, the monthly payment may be higher compared to monthly rental, this will remain fixed over a long period of time while rent tends to go up over time and will eventually be higher. And at the end, the homeowner gets to keep the home, while the renter still doesn’t own the home.

And finally, because the monthly payments are fixed for a long period of time, no adjustments have to be made to the budget as compared to renting. Rent will gradually rise but the monthly payments on a home will remain constant.

Jordan Yarbrough is a well-known real estate broker, having served many home buyers and sellers in his 17 years of handling real estate transactions. Those who are looking for homes in Rocklin and other parts of the Sacramento area may therefore want to contact him. The communities that he currently serves are Fair Oaks, Folsom, Granite Bay, Loomis, Penryn, Rocklin, and Roseville.

Regent Square Recovery Detox Supports Youth To Combat Substance Abuse

January 30, 2019 – – Substance abuse often affects people during the years when they should be completing school or finding employment, and the entrapment of youth in drug and alcohol abuse, as opposed to engagement in legitimate employment and educational opportunities, poses distinct barriers to the development of individuals and communities.

Substance abuse among youth has severe effects on our communities and families, and has many potential physical and mental health effects for the users, such as increased risk of injury and death due to either violence or accidents; increased probability of engaging in sexual behaviour with high risk of teen pregnancy and transmittable diseases; and increased risk for suicidal behaviour and psychosocial disorders. Abuse of different substances is furthermore also often the reason for declining grades, high absenteeism and school dropouts as well as involvement in crime and gang-related activities.

Substance abuse can be common among people suffering from mental health conditions. People experiencing anxiety, depression, or other mental illnesses often turn to drugs or alcohol to find temporary comfort. These substances are also sometimes used as a coping mechanism for those enduring a great deal of stress or hardship, such as experiencing troubles at home or at school, or losing a loved one.

Using drugs or alcohol to deal with difficult feelings or symptoms of mental illness is sometimes called ‘self-medication.’ But it can make existing mental health problems worse. Studies have for example shown that people who consume high amounts of alcohol are vulnerable to higher levels of mental ill health.

According to reports published in the Journal of the American Medical Association: Roughly 50 percent of individuals with severe mental disorders are affected by substance abuse, 37 percent of alcohol abusers and 53 percent of drug abusers also have at least one serious mental illness, Of all people diagnosed as mentally ill, 29 percent abuse either alcohol or drugs.

It is vitally important that the youth are educated about the dangers of drugs and alcohol abuse, and that they are provided with the emotional support they need so that they do not develop the need to turn to substance use for comfort. It is also essential that parents, teachers and the youth themselves are educated about the signs and symptoms of substance abuse, so that they can identify it early on and get the affected person help as soon as possible.

“All sectors of society needs to prioritise the support, education and protection of our youth against substance abuse, and to work together to safeguard their physical and mental health,” says Regent Square Recovery Detox.

Squirrel Hill Recovery Detox Reports: Prescription Opioid Abuse is an Epidemic in the U.S.

January 30, 2019 – – The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention described abuse of prescription drugs in the U.S. as a growing and deadly epidemic. Deaths in the U.S. from prescription opioid overdose have grown from approximately 4,000 in 1999 to approximately 19,000 in 2014.

Extended-release formulations are attractive targets for non-medical abuse since they contain relatively large doses of the active drug. Although the drug is intended to be released over a prolonged period, abusers frequently destroy the time-release mechanism by chewing, crushing or dissolving the formulation in commonly available household beverages or solvents.

In response to widespread prescription opioid abuse, the U.S. government and a number of state legislatures have introduced, and in some cases have enacted, legislation and regulations intended to encourage the development of abuse-deterrent forms of pain medications. The FDA has stated that addressing prescription drug abuse is a priority, and the development of abuse-deterrent opioids is a key part of that strategy.

According to Squirrel Hill Recovery Detox, chronic pain affects approximately 100 million people in the U.S. and 20-30% of the population worldwide – more than heart disease, cancer and diabetes combined. As such, chronic pain is a widespread and growing problem for which many patients do not receive adequate treatment. In many cases, pain is undertreated due to concerns about abuse and tampering with currently available treatment options. Although prescription opioids remain the primary treatment for chronic pain, growing public health concerns regarding the abuse and misuse of these analgesics has, at times, resulted in reduced patient access to safe and effective treatments.

Highland Recovery Detox Reports Teens Using Vaping Devices in Record Numbers

January 30, 2019 – – America’s teens report a dramatic increase in their use of vaping devices in just a single year, with 37.3 percent of 12th graders reporting “any vaping” in the past 12 months, compared to just 27.8 percent in 2017. These findings come from the 2018 Monitoring the Future (MTF) survey of a nationally representative sample of 8th, 10th and 12th graders in schools nationwide, funded by a government grant to the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. The annual results were announced today by the director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the National Institutes of Health, along with the scientists who lead the research team.

Reported use of vaping nicotine specifically in the 30 days prior to the survey nearly doubled among high school seniors from 11 percent in 2017 to 20.9 percent in 2018. More than 1 in 10 eighth graders (10.9 percent) say they vaped nicotine in the past year, and use is up significantly in virtually all vaping measures among eighth, 10th and 12th graders. Reports of past year marijuana vaping also increased this year, at 13.1 percent for 12th graders, up from 9.5 percent last year.

Highland Recovery Detox states, “Teens are attracted to the flavorings in vaping, however, it is urgent teens understand the possible effects of vaping on overall health; the development of teen brain; and potential for addiction.”

The percent of 12th graders who say they vaped “just flavoring” in the past year also increased to 25.7 percent in 2018 from 20.6 percent in 2017. However, it is unclear if teens know what is in the vaping devices they are using, since the most popular devices do not have nicotine-free options, and some labeling has been shown to be inaccurate. There was also a significant jump in perceived availability of vaping devices and liquids in eighth and 10th graders, with 45.7 percent and 66.6 percent, respectively, saying the devices are “fairly easy” or “very easy” to get.

Highland Recovery Detox points out that the one-year increases in the prevalence of nicotine vaping translate into approximately 1.3 million additional adolescents who vaped in 2018, as compared with 2017. The increase in vaping rates between 2017-2018 also aligns with the recently released CDC/FDA government funded National Youth Tobacco Survey.

This year’s survey shows regular tobacco is still at its lowest point in the survey since it began measuring it, with only 3.6 percent of high school seniors smoking daily, compared to 22.4 percent two decades ago. Smoking tobacco with a hookah is significantly lower than five years ago, at 7.8 percent in the past year among high school seniors, compared to 21.4 percent in 2013.

Cali Dreamz Shows How It Is Beneficial To Hire A Realtor When Planning To Buy A Home

January 30, 2019 – – Cali Dreamz Real Estate, based in Rocklin, CA, has announced that they want to show the many reasons why people would want to hire a real estate agent. With houses now available for purchase through the Internet, many people are now wondering why they would need the services of a realtor. Thus, they would like to answer those who are asking the question, “Should I use a realtor to buy a house?”

Jordan Yarbrough, realtor at Cali Dreamz Real Estate, says, “There are actually many reasons why people would want to hire a real estate agent. One of the primary reasons is that realtors have the necessary education and experience in dealing with the seller. Those who will negotiate with the seller on their own will be at a disadvantage because they’re not familiar with such transactions. But an experienced realtor will know how to negotiate and get the best possible outcome.”

Another good reason to get the services of a realtor is that he is familiar with that particular neighborhood. Realtors know the prices of houses in that particular community and will be able to negotiate much better with the seller. Also, they will know the pros and cons of living in that particular community and can advise the buyer on the best places to buy a home in that neighborhood and those places that they need to avoid.

Furthermore, realtors are familiar with the market conditions for that neighborhood. They know when the conditions are favorable for buying a home in that particular area. And for those communities where they are not familiar with, they are likely to know other realtors who are knowledgeable about that particular area where the home buyer is interested in.

An important area in which realtors can be a real benefit to home buyers is in handling the large amount of paperwork that is required. Home buyers are not likely to be familiar with these. Purchase agreements are now 10 pages or more in length and that does not even include the disclosures required by federal and state laws. A small mistake there can result into some legal issues.

And after closing, home buyers will still find real estate agents to be helpful. Even for the smoothest transactions, some important questions may arise later on such as property tax assessments, documentary stamps or transfer tax being months behind. Fortunately, the real estate agent can be called upon to handle the problem and straighten it out. If the home buyer has chosen a really dependable real estate agent, he will always be ready to provide help when such things happen.

And finally, home buyers would be able to rely on real estate agents when they need so sell their home or want to buy another home. Good agents even provide updates to their clients on market trends, informing them when it is a good time to buy or sell a home.

Jordan Yarbrough is a real estate broker with an excellent reputation as he has 17 years of experience in handling real estate transactions. Those who are looking for homes in Rocklin and other parts of the Sacramento area can rely on his services. Cali Dreamz Real Estate currently serves the communities of Folsom, Fair Oaks, Loomis, Granite Bay, Rocklin, Penryn, and Roseville.

That Jordan provides excellent service is proven by the many positive reviews that previous clients have provided. For instance, in one of the five star reviews on Google, Ryan L. says, “I experienced excellence first hand working with Mr. Jordan as my realtor. He was simply outstanding and delivered a result that was beyond my expectations. The services he offered were exceptional. He was very flexible with his time, and we had a couple of meetings during weekend and late evenings. I strongly recommend Jordan and his team at Cali Dreamz Real Estate to anyone looking for a home and I will definitely come back the next time I move again.”

Real Estate Broker Shares Advice on “Why You Should Sell Your Home Now”

January 30, 2019 – – The housing market isn’t in the best shape, but Jordan Yarbrough of Cali Dreamz Real Estate says now is a good time to sell.

In the second half of 2018, home price growth slowed as few buyers entered the market and this made many potential sellers hold off. But while there won’t be a rush of buyers this year, the market is not bad for sellers.

In fact, Yarbrough said people considering selling within the next year or two should make their move now. In these unpredictable times, he said 2020 and 2021 may not be better than this year.

The California real estate broker says, “We’ve highlighted four key reasons why you should sell your home now. Firstly, there are still new buyers coming into the market. Homeowners with houses at the higher end of the price range in some markets may see reduced interest. However, housing inventory is low so people who are ready will still buy homes.”

Among those likely to commit in 2019 are millennials, most of whom are first-time homebuyers. A Harris Poll survey conducted in 2018 found that 25 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 24 planned to buy a home in 12 months. Furthermore, millennials made up 36 percent of homebuyers as of March 2018, according to figures from the National Association of Realtors.

The second factor Yarbrough highlighted was that interest rates remained on the low side. In November, interest rates on 30-year fixed-rate mortgages reached 4.87 percent. While this is the highest since February 2011, it is considerably lower than 1981’s 18 percent. Yarbrough said rates are unlikely to jump significantly in 2019 but they will increase over the next 12 months. This makes it a good time for house seekers to make their purchases.

Yarbrough also said homeowners should sell now because they have high equity. “Those who bought during the recession benefitted from really low interest rates and home prices continued to be low for some time. Their equity would have increased with almost every monthly payment. Add to that the renovations they did and the neighboring houses which sold for much more. This high equity means they will get a lot more from the sale,” the broker explained.

Yarbrough said, “You have to know when to sell your house and buy a new one. Those who sell now will get a sizeable amount which they can use as a down payment for their next home.”

The fourth reason why Yarbrough suggests selling now is that a recession could be imminent. If so, 2019 is definitely the best time to put a home on the market. Many real estate experts and economists believe the next recession will occur in 2020 while others don’t expect in until 2021. There are however some who believe the recession could come this year.

Yarbrough says homeowners who are looking to sell between this year and 2021 should move now and avoid all the uncertainty. He said regardless of when the recession occurs, no wild swings in real estate patterns are likely in the near future.

“There are no signs that home prices will spike or that there will be a significant increase in demand. We’re at that point in the cycle where we’re between a buyer’s market and a seller’s market so no major upswings are likely in the immediate future,” Yarbrough said.

The broker also had some advice for those who are looking to buy homes in 2019. He suggested they ask the seller about why they were selling and why the house was on the market. He also recommended asking how much they paid for the house and when. Yarbrough said any problems with the house should also be disclosed. He especially stressed that these are questions to ask when buying a house without a realtor.

Cali Dreamz Real Estate is one of the state’s top brokerages with over 20 years’ experience in the real estate and mortgage industries.
