In New York City, the state’s second-largest city – home to more than half of the nation’s drug addicts by population – fentanyl deaths have risen 354 percent in the past five years, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

The number of overdose deaths in Humboldt County fell from last year to 72 in 2019, more than the 51 deaths the year before. Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties, like the rest of the state, reported an increase in overdoses from 2016 to 2017, but not as much as 2018.

Still, the latest figures show that deaths have tended to rise, and there was a significant increase in overdose deaths in Humboldt County in 2019, according to preliminary federal data based on data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
