JC Ramirez, the Vice President of ADL Embedded Solutions, took part in a panel discussion centered around PC/104-centric system development and the challenges PC/104 suppliers faced during the economic downturn brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.
San Diego, CA, United States – January 19, 2022 /MarketersMedia/ —
ADL Embedded Solutions’s Vice President JC Ramirez recently took the role of a panelist in a PC/104 annual roundtable alongside other notable industry experts: Flemming Christensen, Managing Director at Sundance Microprocessor Technology, George T. Hilliard, Technical Sales Director at WinSystems, and Roy Keeler, Senior Product and Business Development Manager, Aerospace & Defense, ADLINK Technology and Vice President of Branding for the PC104 Consortium.
The panel was hosted by PC/104 and Small Form Factors. The four panelists agreed that PC/104 suppliers have managed to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic-induced economic crisis due to PC/104 applications in the defense industry, but faced challenges in other application areas, including industrial, aerospace, and transportation. PC104 Consortium members also agreed that new developments are redefining the domain of PC/104 products and services.
When asked to comment on the impact of the pandemic on key PC/104 markets from the perspective of ADL Embedded Solutions, Mr. Ramirez emphasized that PC/104-centric system development tends to have a long gestation period, so the disruptive effect of the pandemic was somewhat limited. He said ADLES has had to deal with delayed project timelines as a result of travel restrictions and other social distancing guidelines at the state and federal level throughout the year 2021, but that the momentum of the PC/104 development and production work was enough to sustain the company and its clients through most of the year 2020.
Mr. Ramirez stated that ADELS’ biggest market for PC/104 continues to be military and defense ground vehicles and avionics, which is the area which he believes will continue to have the strongest outlook for growth going forward. In terms of the geographic area with the strongest growth potential for PC/104, Mr. Ramirez said it was the U.S. market that remains the company’s strongest current and future growth market for PC/104. He added that ADLES is currently focused on “migrating legacy systems onto new generation processors to support next generation features and security requirements”.
In terms of commercial processing technology used to enable PC/104, Mr. Ramirez commented that the most frequent customer request ADLES receives concerns GPGPU technology for advanced processing applications, and that the most commonly requested GPU technology is from NVIDIA. Mr. Ramirez highlighted the fact that there was a “distinct lack of options for PC/104, wide-temperature Nvidia GPU solutions”. He added that there is a growing demand for more wide-temperature Nvidia chipsets and corresponding board/module solutions which he hopes vendors will be able to respond to in the future.
When asked to share his thoughts on the future from the point of view of artificial intelligence/machine learning (AI/ML), Mr. Ramirez responded that the company is not currently seeing many requests for these applications, but that he expects this to change in the near future, adding that the company was ready to integrate new technologies in order to accommodate clients’ changing needs. He stated: “The most rewarding aspect of our work is creating a new solution that addresses our customer’s recently developed applications and features.”
