Next, they will have to obtain beneficiaries’ contact details and notify them. It is also advisable to copy portions or the trust agreement and send it to beneficiaries as they have a right to it.

A trustee needs to send notices to the Social Security Administration, post office, banks, financial advisors, a decedent’s place of employment, insurance companies and many others.

Some states even require mandatory filings of the documents, such as the original will, the death certificate and filing a notice of trust with the probate court or clerk of court.

Garner said dealing with a relative’s financials is among the trickier aspects of being a trustee. They are considered a “fiduciary” and have to locate and take custody of assets, such as bank statements, life insurance policies, and federal and state tax returns.

“A trustee will also have to understand the decedent’s debts which can include hospital, medical and funeral costs or any creditor who can possibly have a claim on the estate. They should assess potential claims carefully before agreeing to pay any debts against the estate.”

Garner added that anyone unsure of their role or responsibilities as trustee/executor should consult an experienced estate planning attorney for guidance. 

“That extra helping hand can play a significant part towards a stress-free approach to an estate’s administration,” he concluded.

Another Medicaid misconception is that individuals don’t have to be concerned with Medicaid planning. “Many clients don’t realize just how costly long-term nursing care can be, so it’s important to prepare early for potential Medicaid assistance. The earlier you begin, the more money you’ll be able to protect,” he added.

“Another misstep is that once individuals have moved to a nursing residence, it’s too late to begin Medicaid planning. Even if you or your loved one has already used funds to pay for care at a nursing facility, there could still be time for Medicaid planning. This is especially the case for anyone married,” Haiman said.

George Pelgrim Donates Vehicle to Senior Citizens

The Home Away from Home Taking Care of the Golden age is the proud recipient of a brand new Bus, courtesy of George Pelgrim and St. Maarten Shipping & Stevedoring. Established in 2003, to provide assistance to seniors and the elderly here on St. Maarten, the foundation has a membership of over 125 members. Membership consists of both active and shut-in members.

With all of it’s members being over the age of 65, The Golden Age Foundation has realized the challenges involved with members getting in and out of public transportation.

Hurricane Irma

In 2017, The Golden Age Foundation started a drive to acquire a new bus. The foundation initiated fundraisers and reached out to the business community to assist. Determined to succeed, they were able to raise the sum of $4,000. However, tragedy struck when the island was devastated by Hurricane Irma, and it put the project on hold. Fast forward two years later, just as the island was starting to get back on it’s feet the entire world was hit with the Covid-19 pandemic, and all fundraising efforts came to a halt. 

Despite these setbacks, The Golden Age foundation remained determined to provide safe and reliable transportation for its members. While reaching out to the local business community, one of the potential sponsors who received a proposal letter was George Pelgrim. For years, philanthropy and giving back to the community has been a staple in Mr. Pelgrim’s life in St. Maarten, so teaming up with The Golden Age Foundation was an easy decision. 

Thanks to contributions from George Pelgrim and a host of other sponsors, The Golden Age Foundation now has a brand new bus. The bus will be used to transport members to the John Larmonie Center, where the foundation meets weekly. Other uses of the bus will be to provide transportation to outdoor actives, as well as transporting members to run errands if they have no other means of transportation.
