Beating Pandemic-Related Challenges 

SEE TEFL admits that the school has been among those hit hard by the pandemic over the last two years, as courses are taught onsite. According to the school, its biggest challenge was the technical side of offering online classes. 

For much of the last two years, SEE TEFL couldn’t visit local schools for observed teaching practices. Instead, the company relied much on Zoom, where observers could view classes and give feedback in real time. The trainees would deliver their teaching practices from one of the classrooms at SEE TEFL. 

John Quinn shared, ‘However, we have excellent management and staff so we were able to adapt quickly and effectively to this situation. From the time COVID-19 restrictions started affecting our programs, we started offering onsite, as before, and live training from the same training room via Zoom. We set up two cameras in the training room so that those taking training via Zoom could see their fellow onsite trainees and the trainer at the same time. They were also able to participate fully in all training inputs, including the observed teaching practices.’ 

Looking Forward To Post-Pandemic Classes 

With Thailand travel restrictions easing and the Thai government treating COVID-19 as an endemic starting July, SEE TEFL is looking forward to the return of larger groups of onsite TEFL teachers. The school expects that it won’t be for long, everything will turn back to normal, and the number of teachers wanting to train under them would balloon.

Drew Feely (17) and Parker Calvert (18) each have an unusual goal: to become professional contemporary circus artists. Unlike their peers who spend their time at school dances and social events, these two spend their free time training. Hard.

Both are students at Akrosphere Aerial & Circus Arts, a studio in Alpharetta, GA, that teaches circus classes to kids through adults. Parker has been training in circus arts since he was 5 years old, specializing in the Corde Lisse or Aerial Rope. Drew started his circus training later, at age 11, specializing in Trapeze. On top of their regular public school class load, each of them spends roughly 20 hours per week in the circus gym in a combination of training on their apparatus, tumbling, conditioning, and stretching.

The boys began preparing for their professional circus auditions about two years ago, working closely with their Akrosphere circus coaches to create the artistic routines they would use to audition. Each of Akrosphere’s nationally and internationally renowned coaches is a professional themselves, so mentoring kids into the professional circus life is just part of the job. Early in 2022, Parker and Drew flew to London to audition for the prestigious National Centre for Circus Arts, currently one of the very top professional circus schools in the world. They spent a week there, auditioning, working with some of the coaches, and going through the in-person interviews necessary to even be considered for a spot. National Centre only has 20-25 spots available each year to students worldwide, so the competition is tough.

One week after returning to the states, they each got a phone call with wonderful news: they had BOTH been accepted to begin at National Centre in the fall of 2022. Students from Akrosphere had taken up about 10% of the available spots.

This is not the first time an Akrosphere student has been accepted into a top circus program. They currently have a student already at National Centre for Circus Arts, specializing in Dance Trapeze and Contortion. And there are more on the way.

“Next year (Spring of 2023) we will be graduating another four students who all have aspirations for top circus schools around the world,” states Jen MacQueen, owner of Akrosphere. “École Nationale de Cirque in Montreal (aka the “Cirque du Soleil school”), École de Cirque de Québec in Quebec, École Supérieure des Arts du Cirque in Belgium, The Centre National des Arts du Cirque in France, and a few others. We have a heck of a year coming up, training these kids for their auditions.”

However they are quickly gaining a reputation for turning out professional level circus performers, and many of their students reach professional levels before they turn 15.

“Out of our roughly 300 students, we currently have a performing company of about 30 kids, all between the ages of 9 and 17. The company is mixed pre-professional and professional levels, but we have about 12 pro-level kids in there…and the pre-professional kids are catching up fast,” says MacQueen. The company produces 4 contemporary circus shows per year that perform in theaters around Georgia, plus festivals and a few other venues.

The students at Akrosphere rave about it, calling the studio everything from “their happy place” to their “second home”; one student even has Jen in their phone as “Mom #2”.

“We really are a family here,” says MacQueen, “and when we are creating, whether it be an audition act or a full contemporary show, it’s always collaborative, so the kids are learning to be artists themselves, rather than just spitting out numbers that the coaches set on them…that is something that really separates Akrosphere from many other circus schools for youth around the world; we have an active interest in creating artists.”

And the kids coming out of Akrosphere are artists indeed. Parker and Drew each created their own audition acts, with guidance from their Akrosphere coaches. Other Akrosphere artists have gone on to perform with many top circus companies around the world.
